HOW TO OPEN A CRIMINAL CASE
 

 

USE THIS GUIDE AS A TEMPLATE ONLY

1. Collect all the relevant evidence about your case and have it documented and printed.

  • Evidence must include:

  • All communications between yourself and the suspect.

  • Proof of payment documents, or bank statements.

  • A detailed statement of events describing exactly how the crime commenced. (example attached below)

  • Photos, videos, screenshots, voicenotes, must be stored on a USB flash drive and handed to the SAPS.​

2. Make extra copies of every document so that you can leave a copy with the SAPS.


3. Print any supporting documentation that supports your case, and leave a copy with the SAPS.

  • Supporting documentation includes:

  • Social media publications from other potential victims.

  • Social media publications by the suspect.

  • Media articles / Projects relating to the suspect and criminal behavior by the suspect.

Always take your ID, Drivers Licence's or other form of identification with you.

 

  • IF ALL OF THE ABOVE IS IN ORDER, VISIT YOUR LOCAL POLICE STATION

  • Exercise patience at the Police station, be curtious and understanding of the fact that it may be busy and crowded.

  • Upon registering a case, the SAPS might not take all of your evidence into possession immediately, they might instruct you to keep it safe and to hand it over to the Investigating Officer who will be appointed once your case has been registered and a CAS number has been assigned.

NOTE: ALWAYS ASK FOR A COPY OF YOUR STATEMENT IF THE STATEMENT IS DRAFTED AT THE POLICE STATION.
