Victims of grooming may not always outwardly display distress.
Grooming is subtle and often gradual, so the warning signs are usually behavioural,
emotional, or social rather than immediately obvious.
1. EMOTIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL INDICATORS:
Sudden mood changes:
Anxious, withdrawn, fearful, or unusually secretive.
Confusion about boundaries or what is “normal” in relationships.
Guilt or shame:
Blaming themselves for events or interactions.
Low self-esteem or dependency on the groomer for approval.
Fear of speaking out:
Worried about consequences for themselves or the groomer.
2. BEHAVIOURAL CHANGES:
Isolation from family, friends, or authority figures.
Excessive secrecy about activities, messages, or online interactions.
Unexplained gifts or possessions received from an adult or older peer.
Reluctance to attend school, community, or social events.
Changes in digital behaviour: new devices, secret accounts, sudden deletion of messages, or spending more time online alone.
3. SOCIAL AND INTERPERSONAL SIGNS:
Aligning too closely with an adult or older peer; exhibiting loyalty or defending them when questioned.
Avoiding interactions with peers or adults who might question the groomer.
Adopting language, phrases, or interests introduced by the groomer.
Developing secretive or “hidden” relationships outside parental knowledge.
4. PHYSICAL OR HEALTH INDICATORS (LESS COMMON BUT SERIOUS):
Unexplained injuries or signs of physical abuse.
Sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, or psychosomatic complaints (headaches, stomach aches).
Signs of sexualised behaviour inappropriate for the victim's age.
5. RED FLAGS IN THE DIGITAL CONTEXT:
Receiving frequent messages, calls, or video contact from unknown adults.
Sudden interest in or exposure to sexual content introduced by another.
Attempts to hide devices, clear histories, or passwords.
Being asked to send photos, videos, or personal information secretly.
Grooming often succeeds through emotional manipulation, secrecy, and isolation.
Early detection relies on observation of changes in behaviour, relationships, or online habits.
Maintaining open communication and encouraging children or vulnerable adults to speak freely about discomfort is critical.
Trust your instincts: if something feels off, it often is.
If you are a victim of grooming or suspect that a loved one is being groomed,
contact Mr. Mike Bolhuis immediately.

Respect and protect your privacy at all times.
Guide you to the appropriate authorities and support services.
Ensure that you or your loved one receives the necessary help, intervention, and protection.
