Specialised Security Services is receiving multiple reports of animal poisonings, affecting both domestic pets and wildlife. These disturbing incidents point to a growing trend of cruelty and criminal intent that poses a serious threat to biodiversity and community safety. SSS is actively investigating these cases. We urge the public to stay vigilant, safeguard their animals, and report any suspicious behaviour immediately. Protecting animals from harm is not only a moral responsibility -
it is also a critical part of protecting our environment and upholding the law.
Animal poisoning is a troubling issue, with criminal elements weaponising agricultural pesticides such as Temik (aldicarb), Ethion, and Terbufos to harm guard dogs, livestock, and exotic wildlife.
This illicit practice poses serious threats to animal welfare and national security, agriculture, and tourism.
HOW POISONS ARE ADMINISTERED:
Criminals commonly administer these toxic substances by mixing them into food or bait such as meat or bread.
These pesticides, particularly Temik, are often illegally obtained and disguised in granular form to ensure easy ingestion by unsuspecting animals.
Temik, known for its distinctive black granules, is frequently used to poison guard dogs, which are seen as barriers to criminal activity like housebreaking and vehicle theft.
Similarly, Ethion and Terbufos, both organophosphate insecticides, are likely used in comparable ways.
Terbufos, typically available in granules, are often mixed into food or water and used to poison livestock or wildlife, sometimes out of revenge or in furtherance of illegal activities.
The goal is to neutralise animal sentries or harm economic and environmental assets.
This method is hazardous when used against exotic wildlife, as it impacts biodiversity and conservation efforts, indirectly undermining tourism - a key income stream for many communities.
FINANCIAL IMPACT ON THE ECONOMY:
The economic consequences of animal poisoning are far-reaching. Although exact figures are difficult to determine, several key sectors show apparent vulnerabilities:
AGRICULTURAL LOSSES:
The poisoning of farm animals such as cattle and sheep results in reduced productivity, increased veterinary costs, and long-term damage to the export-driven agricultural sector.
As detailed by South Africa’s Agricultural Sector Trade Report, the industry already grapples with high input costs and disease risks, and poisoning only worsens these burdens.
RISING SECURITY COSTS:
With guard dogs being targeted, property owners are forced to invest in costly security alternatives, such as surveillance systems or human guards.
This strains individual and business budgets and shifts resources from other vital areas.
TOURISM AND BIODIVERSITY LOSS:
Wildlife poisoning has profound implications for tourism revenue.
South Africa’s status as a safari and ecotourism destination is threatened by the loss of species like rhinos and lions, which are sometimes poisoned in poaching-related incidents.
According to the Economic Impact of Illegal Wildlife Trade, such activities cause financial losses and diminish the country’s international appeal.
Moreover, these losses ripple through rural economies dependent on farming and ecotourism, exacerbating poverty and impeding economic recovery, especially in the context of ongoing energy crises and inflation, as noted in the World Bank’s South Africa Overview.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:
SECURE FOOD SOURCES:
Keep animal food indoors or in secure containers to prevent tampering, as the NSPCA Animal Poisoning Guide emphasises.
TRAIN GUARD DOGS:
Teach dogs to avoid unfamiliar food, a tactic supported by Servamus’s safety recommendations.
REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES:
Any signs of poison baits or criminal behaviour should be immediately reported to SAPS to ensure community safety.
SUPPORT COMMUNITY AWARENESS:
Advocate for regulating illegal pesticide sales and educate others on the risks, using resources like the Highly Hazardous Pesticide List.
POISON TYPES, ADMINISTRATION AND PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:

The issue of animal poisoning in South Africa is far more than an animal rights concern - it is a multifaceted crisis impacting security, the economy, and ecological balance. With organophosphate poisons like Temik, Ethion, and Terbufos being used with increasing frequency and sophistication, collective awareness and preventative action are more critical than ever.
Vigilance, education, and community engagement are critical against this threat to safeguard animals
and the economic lifelines of agriculture and tourism.

And also those who would poison rats in their houses and thereafter throw dead mice unsafely around the area, those people are a threat to our pets. Also, it is dangerous to stay nearer to an area of housebreakers and trespassers because there's a strong rumour of dog poisoning habit, which they perform at night, which I suspected after death of my four puppies. They do that in order to get a way to committing crimes in our residential area. That's very cruel.
