PROJECT: BUILDING CHILD EMERGENCY AWARENESS WITHOUT FEAR (PART 2)

Specialised Security Services (SSS) has identified that many South African children are not adequately prepared

to respond to unexpected situations—not due to negligence, but due to a lack of structured, practical training.

Safety education must move away from fear-based warnings and toward clear,

actionable behaviour that children can apply under pressure.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WITHOUT FEAR:

  • SSS emphasises:

    • Children must leave safety discussions feeling: “I know what to do.”

    • Not: “The world is dangerous.”

  • TEACH ACTION — NOT FEAR:

    • Instead of: “Someone might kidnap you.”

    • Use: “If something unexpected happens, here is what you do.”

  • CORE SAFETY RULES FOR CHILDREN:

    • Stay where trusted adults can see you.

    • Never leave without permission.

    • Report changes before they happen.

    • Choose safe, familiar adults when unsure.

  • DEFINE “TRUSTED ADULTS” CLEARLY:

    • Children must understand exactly who qualifies:

      • Teachers.

      • School staff.

      • Security personnel.

      • Police officers.

      • Parents of known friends.

    • In South Africa’s shared public environments, this clarity is critical.

  • THE EMERGENCY SCRIPT PRINCIPLE:

    • Children perform better with short, rehearsed scripts:

      • Stop moving.

      • Identify safest adult.

      • Call parent.

      • Stay visible.

  • CRITICAL INFORMATION EVERY CHILD MUST KNOW:

    • Parent’s phone number (by memory).

    • Surname.

    • Home area.

    • Backup trusted adult.

      • Phones fail. Memory does not.

  • PRACTICAL TRAINING SCENARIOS:

    • Parents should actively rehearse:

      • Late lift.

      • Dead phone.

      • Unknown collection attempt.

      • Separation in public.

    • This builds calm reflex responses.

  • TEACH THE RIGHT TO REFUSE:

    • Children must be empowered to say:

      • “I need to call my parent first.”

    • This is a primary protective barrier against manipulation.

SEVEN CRITICAL EMERGENCY PHRASES:

  • Children should practise saying:

    • “Please call my parent now.”

    • “I am not allowed to go with anyone unless my parent says so.”

    • “I need help, I am lost.”

    • “My name is ___ and my parent’s number is ___.”

    • “I will wait here where people can see me.”

    • “I don’t know you. I need to call home first.”

    • “Something is wrong. Please stay with me.”

  • These phrases increase the likelihood of immediate assistance.

Prepared children are not fearful children—they are capable children.

The ability to respond calmly in an unexpected situation is not instinctive;

it is trained through repetition, clarity, and confidence-building.

Specialised Security Services (SSS) urges parents to actively practise these protocols within their households.

A child who can communicate clearly under pressure is significantly safer than one who cannot.
