Protecting Your Digital Life
In our digital world, cybercriminals often exploit travellers who connect to public networks
or make online transactions abroad.
Mr. Mike Bolhuis and Specialised Security Services (S.S.S.),
provides important cyber safety tips for those travelling internationally.
10 ESSENTIAL CYBER SAFETY MEASURES:
1. Avoid using public Wi-Fi for financial transactions.
2. Enable two-factor authentication on all critical accounts.
3. Keep your devices updated with the latest security patches.
4. Use a reliable VPN when connecting abroad.
5. Avoid charging devices in public USB stations (use your own adapter).
6. Back up all important data before leaving home.
7. Use strong, unique passwords for each platform.
8. Disable Bluetooth and location tracking when not needed.
9. Never click suspicious links or download unknown apps.
10. Always log out of accounts after use.
10 LIFE HACKS FOR DIGITAL TRAVELLERS:
1. Save key documents in encrypted cloud storage.
2. Carry a portable Wi-Fi hotspot for safer connections.
3. Use travel SIMs with data limits to reduce risk exposure.
4. Label your tech gear for easy identification.
5. Store emergency contact numbers offline.
6. Travel with minimal tech — only what you need.
7. Turn on “Find My Device” tracking for all electronics.
8. Keep digital copies of your itinerary and tickets.
9. Avoid connecting to unknown Bluetooth devices.
10. Wipe sensitive data before repair or inspection abroad.
In today’s interconnected world, every traveller is also a digital traveller.
Whether booking accommodation online, sharing experiences on social media, or using navigation apps abroad, our personal data and digital footprints have become prime targets for criminals.
Cyber scams, data theft, online impersonation, and digital stalking are now among the most common risks facing travellers.
Specialised Security Services (SSS) therefore urges all South Africans to treat online safety with the same seriousness as physical safety. By applying basic digital security measures, such as using strong passwords, avoiding public Wi-Fi for financial transactions, verifying online bookings and profiles, and keeping software up to date,
travellers can significantly reduce their exposure to cyber threats.
Ultimately, awareness and vigilance remain the strongest defences.
Travel smart, both on the road and online, and remember that SSS continues to monitor, investigate, and expose emerging digital crime trends to keep our citizens informed and protected.
Stay alert. Stay informed.
Stay safe — physically and digitally.
