Never take safety for granted.

Specialised Security Services (SSS) reminds all citizens that the Festive Season is not only a time of celebration, travel,

and family gatherings—it is also a period during which criminal activity increases significantly across South Africa.

Never take safety for granted.

Crime levels continue to rise, making heightened vigilance and strict adherence to safety protocols essential

at all times and in all locations.

GENERAL SAFETY PRINCIPLES:

  • STAY ALERT AT ALL TIMES:

    • Criminals exploit distraction, crowds, fatigue, and unfamiliar environments.

    • Whether you are travelling, shopping, or visiting new places, maintain situational awareness.

  • DO NOT DISPLAY VALUABLES:

    • Keep jewellery, phones, wallets, and cash out of sight.

    • Avoid unnecessary attention.

  • PROTECT CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES:

    • Never allow children to walk, shop, or play alone—child kidnappings, exploitation, and abductions increase during the holidays.

  • ENABLE DEVICE TRACKING FOR ALL FAMILY MEMBERS:

    • Ensure everyone understands your family’s emergency plan, meeting points, and communication procedures.

  • SECURE YOUR HOME BEFORE LEAVING:

    • Lock all doors, windows, and gates.

    • Activate alarms, notify your security company, and ensure pets are cared for—consider extreme heat, storms, and holiday travel schedules.

PUBLIC & TRAVEL SAFETY:

  • Be vigilant in shopping centres, on roads, in restaurants, and at fuel stations.

    • Pickpocketing, follow-home robberies, theft, and smash-and-grab increase sharply.

  • Watch for drunk or reckless drivers.

    • Road trauma spikes during this period.

    • Keep a safe following distance, avoid confrontation, and never drive under the influence.

  • Avoid risky behaviour.

    • Alcohol and anger fuel violence, assault, and poor decision-making—stay calm, think clearly, and remove yourself from conflict situations.

ONLINE & FINANCIAL SAFETY:

  • Protect yourself online from holiday scams, vacation fraud, phishing, extortion, and sextortion peak during the Festive Season.

  • Banks and official institutions will NEVER request passwords, PINs, or confidential information by phone, SMS, email, or WhatsApp.

  • Manage your spending.

  • Criminal syndicates prey on financial desperation.

  • Do not overspend or enter illegal loan schemes.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • RESPECT NATURE:

    • Clean up after yourself, follow park rules, and protect wildlife and the environment.

    • Fires, pollution, and negligence cause unnecessary tragedy.

    • Do not use fireworks.

PERSONAL SECURITY & WEAPON SAFETY:

  • Carry only what you need in public.

  • The less you carry, the less you can lose.

  • Handle firearms and weapons responsibly and strictly within legal parameters.

HIGH-RISK CRIMES TO WATCH FOR:

  • Hijacking and kidnapping—especially during travel or late-night driving.

  • Missing persons incidents—often linked to poor supervision, alcohol, or online contact with predators.

  • Follow-home robberies—common after ATM withdrawals, shopping, and fuel stops.

  • Online luring, grooming, and exploitation—particularly targeting minors.

LAW ENFORCEMENT INTERACTIONS:

  • Beware of bribery attempts from police or traffic officers.

  • Remain respectful, keep both hands visible, and record or document the encounter discreetly and safely.

  • Report any corruption or misconduct immediately.

Your safety is your responsibility.

Your vigilance, awareness, and preparation are your strongest defences

during the Festive Season.

Stay alert.

Stay responsible.

Stay safe.
