GENERAL ROAD SAFETY MEASURES:

  • Plan Your Route:

    • Before embarking on your journey, plan your route in advance.

    • Use GPS or maps to familiarise yourself with the roads and potential detours.

    • Stick to well-travelled routes, especially if you are not familiar with the area.

  • Vehicle Maintenance:

    • Ensure your vehicle is in good condition before your trip.

    • Check the brakes, tyres, lights, and fluids.

    • Carry a spare tyre, jack, and necessary tools in case of emergencies.

    • Consider having a professional mechanic inspect your vehicle if you are not confident in your own assessment.

  • Stay Alert:

    • Driving long distances can be tiring, so take regular breaks to rest and stretch your legs.

    • Share driving responsibilities with other passengers if possible.

    • Avoid driving late at night or during periods of fatigue when your concentration may be compromised.

  • Secure Your Belongings:

    • Keep valuables out of sight and securely locked in the trunk or glove compartment to deter theft.

    • Avoid leaving belongings unattended in the car, especially in high-risk areas or when stopping at roadside attractions.

  • Follow Traffic Rules:

    • Observe speed limits, wear seat belts at all times, and avoid reckless driving behaviours such as speeding, tailgating, or overtaking in unsafe conditions.

  • Stay Informed:

    • Keep abreast of local news and safety advisories, especially if travelling through areas known for civil unrest or crime.

    • Monitor reputable sources for any travel warnings or security updates that may affect your itinerary.

    • Stay informed about road conditions, especially dangerous areas known for road spiking or hijacking.

  • Emergency Preparedness:

    • Carry a fully charged mobile phone with emergency contact numbers programmed in.

    • Keep your live location on and share it with a family member or trusted friend.

    • Have a first aid kit, flashlight, water, and non-perishable snacks in the car in case of unexpected delays or emergencies.

  • Stay Connected:

    • Inform someone trustworthy about your travel plans, including your intended route and estimated time of arrival at your destination.

    • Check-in with them periodically, especially if your plans change.
