This project contains graphic descriptions of extreme animal cruelty.

Dog fighting has been illegal in South Africa since 1945, yet it persists as a growing form of organised crime.
Investigations show it has developed into a multi-million-rand underground industry,
spanning from back-alley fights using stolen dogs to highly organised events in purpose-built facilities.
This practice highlights a broader issue: individuals exploiting animals for profit and entertainment, disregarding their welfare.
Reports indicate that dog fighting is frequently associated with other criminal activities,
including illegal gambling, firearms possession, and drug trafficking.
Specialised Security Services recognises this as a serious law enforcement concern,
and continuous community vigilance and reporting are essential to dismantling these operations.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Dog fighting is a sadistic blood sport in which two dogs, specifically trained to fight, are placed in a confined arena to battle each other for spectators’ entertainment and gambling purposes.
Dogs are bred and trained from a very young age to be aggressive.
Victims, most commonly American Pit Bull Terriers, are purpose-bred for fighting or stolen from loving homes. They are subjected to severe abuse, including:
Beatings and physical abuse.
Starvation to increase aggression.
Steroid injections.
Long-term confinement in small cages or chained conditions.
HOW DOGS ARE TRAINED FOR FIGHTING:
Dogs used in fights are systematically conditioned from puppyhood:
EARLY SOCIALISATION:
Puppies are separated from normal domestic life and raised in isolation from other pets.
ANTAGONISING TECHNIQUES:
Dogs are provoked with aggression, including exposure to other dogs in controlled confrontations.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONING:
Intensive exercise using treadmills, running wheels, and pulling weights to build stamina and strength.
PAIN CONDITIONING:
Exposure to controlled pain or discomfort to desensitise the dog to injuries during fights.
AGGRESSION ENHANCEMENT:
Use of starvation, food control, or chemical stimulants to encourage biting and fighting behaviour.
This process ensures that by the time the dog enters its first fight, it is physically strong, conditioned for pain, and highly aggressive.
STRUCTURE OF A DOG FIGHT AND OUTCOME:
A typical dog fight involves:
PREPARATION:
Two dogs are placed in a small, enclosed pit, often just large enough for them to move and bite.
THE FIGHT:
Dogs attack each other using teeth, often causing severe injuries.
Owners or handlers manipulate the fight to encourage aggression.
OUTCOME:
The fight ends either when one dog is incapacitated or killed.
Losing dogs may die from untreated injuries, be executed brutally (hanging, electrocution, drowning, or beating), or abandoned to suffer.
Winning dogs may continue in more fights, but they still live under extreme confinement and abuse.
Dog fighting is not only cruel but also highly illegal, with organised structures resembling criminal fraternities, designed to protect participants from law enforcement and maintain secrecy.

LEGAL FRAMEWORK AND PENALTIES:
Illegal dog fighting is a criminal offence under South African law. Key legislation includes:
Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 – prohibits fighting, cruelty, and neglect of animals.
Criminal Law – offences related to gambling, possession of illegal weapons, and other crimes often associated with dog fighting.
PENALTIES:
Fines and imprisonment for participating in dog fighting.
Additional charges for cruelty, neglect, or associated criminal activity (e.g., drugs, firearms).
Confiscation of animals and property used for illegal fights.
EXAMPLES OF CONVICTIONS:
In 2019, a Gauteng man was sentenced to 5 years’ imprisonment for organising dog fights and cruelty to animals.
In 2021, a Western Cape operator received 3 years’ imprisonment and fines after multiple Pit Bulls were rescued from purpose-built fighting pits.
These examples highlight that law enforcement and the SPCA actively pursue perpetrators, though secrecy makes detection challenging.
COMMON LOCATIONS AND TYPES OF EVENTS:
Illegal dog fighting occurs in:
Townships and gang areas: linked with drugs and firearms
Back alleys, garages, and abandoned buildings: impromptu street fights
Private properties and purpose-built pits: organised events with professional equipment (treadmills, break sticks, scales)
Hotspots exist in multiple provinces, identified by law enforcement and SPCA intelligence.
