Specialised Security Services has received several complaints from the public,
who indicated that Mr Martin Herbst has been misrepresenting himself as:
Mr Mike Bolhuis or an employee of Mr Mike Bolhuis
As a direct result of the complaints, Specialised Security Services has launched an investigation into Mr Herbst.
Several complainants were contacted, and the following was found:
In November 2023, Mr Herbst contacted a member of the public and intimidated the person by claiming that he was Mr Bolhuis.
To create a false sense of authenticity, he saved the profile photo from Mr Bolhuis’ WhatsApp profile, he then proceeded to add the profile photo to his own WhatsApp profile.
This fake Mike Bolhuis profile was then used by Mr Herbst to intimidate those who he had personal quarrels with.
Subsequently, after Mr Herbst was identified as the user behind the fake Mike Bolhuis profile, he was contacted and confronted by Mr Bolhuis.
As a result, Mr Herbst apologised to Mr Bolhuis, and he committed to rectifying the situation.
Shortly after the incident, Netwerk 24 published the following article:
In March 2024, Mr Bolhuis received another complaint about Mr Herbst.
The complainant provided Mr Bolhuis’ Cybercrime Unit with evidence suggesting that Mr Herbst misrepresented himself as an employee of Mr Bolhuis.
A complete WhatsApp conversation export, which detailed the conversation between Mr Herbst and the complainant, was obtained by the Specialised Security Services Cybercrime Unit.
The following could be established from that conversation:
Mr Herbst claimed to be a private investigator employed by Mr Bolhuis.
Mr Herbst received over R12,000.00 from the complainant to investigate a case.
Mr Herbst misled the complainant into thinking that he is working closely with the SAPS.
Mr Herbst misrepresented the progress of the case to the complainant.
Mr Herbst explained to the complainant that he was bribing SAPS officers to make the case progress.
Mr Herbst explained to the complainant that he was bribing a judge for specific favours pertaining to the case.
Mr Herbst led the complainant to believe that he was about to arrest suspects.
He continued to do this to obtain further fees from the complainant.
After the complainant realised that Mr Herbst was not being honest about the case, she insisted on getting her money back. This led to several excuses and promises from Mr Herbst to reimburse the complainant, even though his promises and guarantees never materialised.
Upon completion of the investigation, Mr Herbst was contacted by the Specialised Security Services Cybercrime Unit.
The facts of the investigation were laid before Mr Herbst and he admitted to all of it, but he rejected the fact that he was impersonating Mr Bolhuis. He presented a bizarre version of events where he claimed that a person
who introduced himself as a representative of Mr Bolhuis approached him in a restaurant,
handed him an envelope filled with money and presented him with an employment opportunity.
Mr Herbst claimed that he had received instructions via WhatsApp and that he had collected
the occasional payment in an unmarked envelope at a coffee shop.
Mr Herbst provided a written statement to Mr Bolhuis in this regard.
Read the statement below:
The contents of the statement were investigated, and it was found that Mr Herbst’s version of the statement was not true.
Despite past warnings, Mr Herbst continued to misrepresent himself as Mr Bolhuis,
and he continued to commit fraud whilst using the name of Mr Bolhuis.
Criminal cases of fraud and misrepresentation are being registered against Mr Herbst.
