Mr. Johan Smit, the father of the late Miss Anika Smit, appointed Specialised Security Services on 16 October 2024

to re-investigate the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s death.

He instructed Specialised Security Services to evaluate the available evidence and to redo anything pertaining

to this murder investigation that needs to be redone. This project serves as an official update on a complex

and high-profile crime investigation. The public is advised to rely on factual reporting from official sources and to avoid engaging in speculative or defamatory discussions on social media.

Mr. Johan Smit voluntarily submitted himself to undergo a forensic polygraph test,

which was completed on 25 October 2024.

Mr. Johan Smit fully cooperated with the investigation team and was questioned in-depth

by seasoned investigators from Specialised Security Services.

Specialised Security Services is of the professional opinion that Mr. Johan Smit was honest and truthful throughout this investigation and that he cannot in any way be linked to the horrific murder of his only daughter.

“Collaboration of all involved parties is needed to solve this case.” – Mr. Mike Bolhuis

Mr. Mike Bolhuis is of the opinion that the only way to successfully solve this case is for all parties who were and who are still involved in this investigation to collaborate and join efforts and work together to solve this case. The involvement of Specialised Security Services in this investigation should not be seen as mistrust in the authorities who have been investigating this case from the start, but rather as an opportunity to collaborate and combine resources to solve this case, as it has been proven to be effective in past cases of a similar nature.

It is of the utmost importance to understand that Specialised Security Services always works in support of the authorities, and not as an entity against the authorities. Specialised Security Services have been monitoring this case for many years and have always been available to assist, but it was only now that an official mandate was obtained from Mr. Johan Smit, who instructed Specialised Security Services to do a thorough investigation into this case.

THE HISTORY:

  • The brutal murder of Miss Anika Smit has not only shocked the local community in Pretoria North, but also the entire country.

  • What happened on 10 March 2010 during the morning hours in the house where Miss Anika Smit was residing with her father Mr. Johan Smit, is a mystery that attracted international media interest.

  • Miss Anika Smit was 17 years old at the time of her murder, a grade 11 student who attended Hoerskool Gerrit Maritz in Pretoria North.

  • On 10 March 2010, Miss Anika Smit stayed at home for the day as she was feeling ill.

  • Before departing for work, her father, Mr. Johan Smit, arranged with the local pharmacy to deliver medication for Anika to the house during the morning hours.

  • On the way to work, Mr. Johan Smit stopped at Anika’s school to deliver an assignment that was due on the day.

  • Thereafter, Mr. Johan Smit drove to work, where he remained until the end of his shift.

  • At the residence, the delivery driver from the pharmacy did not get an answer while attempting to deliver the medication to Miss Smit.

  • After several attempts to get the attention of Miss Smit, the driver left with the medication undelivered.

  • During the early morning hours, the next-door neighbour of Mr. Smit exited his driveway on the way to conduct business in town, and he recalled playing with Mr. Smit’s dogs, who were in the front yard, as he closed his gate.

  • He also noticed that Mr. Smit’s front security gate was locked at that time.

  • Upon his return from town, the neighbour noticed that Mr. Smit’s dogs were locked in the back yard and that the front security gate was unlocked.

  • The events did not raise suspicion as the neighbour assumed that a friend was visiting Miss Smit at the time.

  • Also, at approximately noon, a nearby neighbour heard what sounded like an intense scream from a female in nearby proximity to her own house.

  • She could not ascertain at that moment exactly what had occurred or who was screaming, but in retrospect, she realised that it might have been Miss Smit who was crying for help at that time.

  • When Mr. Smit arrived at home from work in the late afternoon, he discovered that his dogs were locked in the backyard and that the front security gate was unlocked.

  • He found it odd, considering the general rule in his household that the security gate must always remain locked.

  • As Mr. Smit entered the house, he noticed signs of a struggle in the living room area.

  • Mr. Smit called out for Miss Smit, but there was no response. At that point, Mr. Smit entered the bedroom of Miss Anika Smit and he was confronted by a horrific scene that no parent should ever have to endure.

  • Miss Anika Smit’s body was found lying on the bedroom floor.

  • She was brutally murdered, sexually assaulted with an object, and her body was mutilated by means that her hands were removed.

  • An official investigation was launched by the SAPS and within a few months, a suspect who was known to Miss Anika Smit was arrested.

  • However, it was later found that the suspect had an alibi for the day of the murder, and his DNA did not match the DNA that was found at the scene of the crime.

  • In 2016, another male suspect handed himself over to the SAPS and he confessed to the murder of Miss Anika Smit.

  • However, it was found that his DNA did not match the DNA found at the crime scene, and subsequently, he withdrew his confession, and he stated that he was forced to confess by an unknown couple who approached him in a club and threatened his family’s safety if he did not confess to the murder of Miss Smit.

It is now 14 years later and the murder investigation into the death of Miss Anika Smit has gone cold; however, an inquest into the murder was ordered and several persons of interest are being called to provide their testimony in court, with the hopes of identifying new evidence that could assist with solving the case.
