Over R10,000,000.00 has been lost by South Africans owing to digital scams in the last 90 days.
With social media activity at an all-time high, it is no surprise that the amount and variety of digital scams are rising. But just how much money do South African citizens lose to cyber criminals?
In the past 90 days, South Africans have reported losses totalling over R10 million, which is the number reported to our organisation alone. The total reported to all organisations in South Africa is believed to be at least five times as much.
SCAMS WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNT OF LOSSES:
1. Sextortion and SAPS impersonator scams
2. Cryptocurrency scams
3. Sweetheart scams
4. Vehicle auction scams
5. Marketplace Scams
6. Online job scams
These scams range from highly sophisticated to incredibly simple, yet the majority of South African victims have fallen prey to fraudsters orchestrating at least one of the 6 scams listed above.
REASONS WHY PEOPLE CONTINUE TO FALL FOR SCAMS:
The answer is much more complicated for some, but for the most part, it can be broken down into three self-explanatory words:
1. Greed
2. Lust
3. Ignorance
Any successful scammer will tell you that the most crucial skill to master as a scammer is the art of manipulation.
The moment a scammer can figure out what drives the potential victim, the scammer can accomplish just about anything.
The unfortunate fact is that most people are driven by either greed or lust, which is often automatically accompanied by ignorance.
Hence, the increasing rate of successful scams is being carried out daily.
HOW TO AVOID FALLING VICTIM TO A SCAM:
Educate yourself on the subject of online fraud.
Train yourself to separate your emotions from your actions.
Whether you are making a purchase online, conversing on a dating app, or investing money, you are bound to be defrauded if you act on emotions.
Conduct proactive investigations instead of reactive investigations.
This means you investigate before you engage to ensure that you are engaging in a legitimate transaction.
With technology increasing and social media becoming more active, cybercriminals are bound to increase in capacity and ability.
Therefore, we urge the public to be more proactive and to make smarter choices when engaging strangers online.
