Men at Increased Risk

SADAG Survey Highlights January 2026 Suicide Trend

As South Africans move into the new year, the aftermath of the festive season continues

to reveal significant mental health challenges.

According to the latest survey conducted by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG),

men remain at a disproportionately high risk of suicide during this period, a trend that requires immediate attention from families, communities, and security practitioners alike.

In South Africa, men are experiencing a critical suicide crisis, with fatal suicide rates four to five times higher than those of women, even though women report attempting suicide more frequently. Contributing factors include social stigma, emotional repression, substance misuse, and societal expectations, creating significant barriers to seeking help.

South Africa consistently ranks among the higher countries globally for suicide, highlighting the urgent need

for enhanced mental health support and cultural change to encourage men to access professional care

and speak openly about their struggles.

Heightened Vulnerability Among Men:

The survey, conducted across multiple provinces including Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu‑Natal, and the Northern Cape, confirms that men are less likely to seek help for emotional distress, yet more likely to act on suicidal thoughts.

Even in January 2026, the post-holiday period remains dangerous, as feelings of isolation, financial strain,

and emotional exhaustion peak following the festive season’s social and economic pressures.

KEY POST-FESTIVE STRESSORS:

  • FINANCIAL PRESSURE:

    • Many South Africans face debt from holiday spending, end-of-year bonuses mismanagement, and early January expenses.

    • SADAG reports that over 70% of respondents experienced financial anxiety after the holidays.

  • SOCIAL ISOLATION:

    • The festive period often amplifies loneliness, particularly for men who may lack supportive networks.

    • SADAG data shows that men experience higher isolation levels compared to women, increasing vulnerability to severe depressive episodes.

  • EMOTIONAL EXHAUSTION:

    • The transition from festive celebrations to daily routines, work, and school responsibilities contributes to fatigue, burnout, and worsening mental health.

AGE-SPECIFIC RISK PATTERNS:

  • Young adults, particularly those aged 26–35, have shown elevated levels of distress in January 2026, suggesting that the combination of festive excess, economic pressure, and social expectation is a potent risk factor.

  • Mental health professionals emphasise that these individuals are among the most critical groups for early intervention.

SSS ADVISORY AND SUPPORT MEASURES:

Specialised Security Services advises South Africans to remain vigilant about their own mental health and that of family members:

  • ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT:

    • Regularly check in with friends, colleagues, and family members, especially men who may be reluctant to speak openly.

  • PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT:

    • Contact SADAG (0800 12 13 14) or other accredited mental health services immediately if signs of depression, anxiety, or suicidal ideation are observed.

  • COMMUNITY AWARENESS:

    • Encourage open conversations about mental health, normalise help-seeking, and reduce the stigma that prevents men from reaching out.

January 2026 represents a critical period for mental health intervention in South Africa.

The post-festive spike in distress, particularly among men, underscores the need for proactive support networks and accessible mental health services. Specialised Security Services emphasises that vigilance, empathy, and prompt action can save lives, making mental health a top priority as the country navigates the new year.
