As part of our ongoing commitment to community safety, we urge elderly citizens and their families to remain alert
and take simple, proactive measures to protect themselves from potential risks while shopping,
driving and navigating parking areas.
Criminal activity and opportunistic incidents often target vulnerable individuals, especially seniors.
By staying aware of their surroundings and practising safe habits,
elderly citizens can significantly reduce the chances of becoming victims.
Staying safe is about being proactive, not fearful.
Confidence comes from knowing you have the tools and the awareness to handle different situations.
SSS encourages everyone to make these practices part of their daily routine.
1. SAFETY WHILE SHOPPING:
Elderly shoppers are encouraged to:
WHILE SHOPPING:
Be alert and purposeful.
PLAN YOUR VISIT:
Shop during daylight hours or busier times of the day.
Avoid late-night trips when stores are empty.
KEEP VALUABLES SECURE:
Carry a purse with a zipper and wear it cross-body, or keep a wallet in your front pocket.
Never leave a purse unattended in a shopping cart.
Stay alert and avoid distractions such as mobile phones while walking through stores or malls.
Keep handbags and wallets secure, preferably zipped and held close to the body.
Avoid carrying large sums of cash; use bank cards or digital payments instead.
Request assistance from store staff if needed, especially when carrying heavy items.
Shop during busy daylight hours, as criminals are less likely to target individuals in well-populated spaces.
2. SAFETY WHILE DRIVING:
To increase personal security on the road, elderly drivers should:
Plan routes in advance, choosing well-lit, familiar roads.
Keep doors locked and windows closed when stationary at intersections or traffic lights.
Remain aware of vehicles of individuals following too closely and stopping in isolated areas.
Never engage with strangers who approach the vehicle unexpectedly.
Perform regular vehicle maintenance to prevent breakdowns in unsafe locations.
WHILE DRIVING: STAY FOCUSED AND SECURE
PLAN YOUR ROUTE:
Know where you are going before you set off to avoid distractions from navigation devices while driving.
KEEP DOORS LOCKED:
Keep your car doors locked and windows rolled up while driving, especially in slow-moving traffic or at traffic lights.
BE CAUTIOUS AT INTERSECTIONS:
Be aware of your surroundings when stopped.
Leave enough space between your car and the one in front to allow for a quick exit if needed.
AVOID DISTRACTIONS:
Focus on the road.
Refrain from using your phone, and store any belongings securely in the trunk or out of sight before you depart.
3. SAFETY IN PARKING LOTS:
Parking lots are transitional spaces that require extra vigilance.
Parking lots present unique risks.
Seniors are encouraged to:
The Golden Rule:
Visibility is your greatest ally.
Avoid parking in secluded corners of the lot.
SCAN YOUR SURROUNDINGS:
Before you get out of your car, take a moment to look around.
Do the same when you return to your vehicle.
HAVE KEYS READY:
As you walk to your car, have your keys in your hand, ready to unlock the door.
This minimises time spent fumbling at the car door.
CHECK THE BACK SEAT:
Before getting in, quickly glance into the back seat and footwells of your car to ensure it is empty and secure.
LOAD PURCHASES QUICKLY:
After shopping, quickly load your bags into the trunk, get in your car, lock the doors, and leave the area.
Do not sit in your car organising purchases or checking receipts.
Choose parking spaces close to entrances or in well-lit areas.
Scan the surroundings before approaching the car to check for suspicious individuals or activities.
Lock the vehicle immediately upon entering and before adjusting seats, bags or devices.
Avoid offering help or accepting help from strangers when loading groceries; ask official staff for assistance instead.
THE POWER OF BEING OBSERVANT AND CONSCIOUS:
At the heart of all these tips is a simple, powerful skill:
Situational Awareness.
KEEP YOUR HEAD UP:
Limit the use of your phone while walking to and from your destination.
Be present in your environment.
NOTICE THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU:
Make casual, non-confrontational eye contact with people.
This shows you are alert and can identify them if needed.
LISTEN:
Avoid wearing headphones or earbuds at a volume that blocks out ambient noise.
Being able to hear approaching vehicles or people is crucial.
TRUST YOUR GUT:
Your intuition is a powerful safety tool.
If something feels wrong, it probably is.
Do not second-guess yourself; move to a safe location.
Our senior community is a treasure.
By working together, staying alert and embracing these simple safety strategies, we can ensure that everyone
feels secure and confident while enjoying their daily lives.
We encourage families, caregivers, businesses, and community organisations
to share these safety guidelines and support elderly people in practising greater vigilance.
By working together, we can create safer environments and empower our senior citizens to
move confidently through their daily activities.
