A new, highly sophisticated scam is currently targeting South African citizens

by exploiting the names of trusted courier services such as DHL, SAFAIR, and other logistics and airline companies.

These scams induce fear and confusion and ultimately extort money from unsuspecting individuals.

This is an urgent public warning not to engage with these scammers under any circumstances.

Contact our team or your nearest SAPS station immediately if you are targeted.

EXAMPLE CASE RECEIVED ON 6 MAY 2025:

A woman claiming to be "Candice Schmidt from DHL" recently contacted one of our clients.
She stated that a parcel sent in the victim's name had been seized due to containing illicit contents, including narcotics, multiple passports, and stolen credit cards.
Despite denying knowledge of the parcel, the victim was falsely accused of identity theft.
The scammer's detailed personal information, including the victim's full name, ID number, address, and financial details, made the call sound legitimate.
The call escalated into a WhatsApp video call with a man impersonating a police officer, wearing a fake uniform and seated in what appeared to be a police station office.
He accused the victim of being connected to a R39 million syndicate involving human trafficking and money laundering and presented a fake arrest warrant.
The trauma deepened as the victim was instructed to read a false confession, told to send hourly selfies, and coerced into paying R50,000.00.
Only after alerting a family member did the victim realise it was a well-crafted scam.

WARNING: SCAMMERS USUALLY HAVE YOUR FULL DETAILS

This is not random.
Criminals do their homework.
In most cases:
- They already have your full name, ID number, address, and phone numbers.
- They impersonate real institutions convincingly.
- They use official logos, documents, and even uniforms to make their scam appear authentic.
- They want to make you panic, as you are easier to control when you are panicked.

5 WAYS TO SPOT THIS SCAM:

A courier company contacts you about a suspicious parcel.
1. They claim it is in your name and was seized owing to illegal content.
You are transferred to the "police" via WhatsApp.
1. No real police force will investigate or interrogate through WhatsApp or video calls.
You receive fake legal documents and arrest warrants.
1. Scammers often use stolen or copied letterheads and official language to convince you.
You are told to pay money to avoid arrest or legal trouble.
1. This is extortion – no legitimate authority operates this way.
You are isolated and controlled.
1. They will tell you not to contact anyone, to stay home, and to send regular photo updates to ensure "compliance."

WHAT YOU MUST DO IMMEDIATELY:

Do NOT pay.
Do NOT communicate further.
Do NOT send any selfies, voice notes, or ID documents.

These are highly trained criminal syndicates that prey on good, law-abiding people using fear and manipulation.

The sooner you report the incident, the better the chances of tracking them down and recovering funds.
