Specialised Security Services (SSS) has been alerted to a new wave of fraudulent activity where criminals are impersonating representatives of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).
These scammers target individuals through phone calls, emails, and messages, falsely claiming that the person's phone number is being used for illegal activities. They then request personal information, which could lead to identity theft,
financial fraud, or unauthorised access to sensitive data.
ICASA has confirmed that they are not making these calls and are not involved in
any activity requiring personal details over the phone or email.
RED FLAGS TO IDENTIFY THE SCAM AND HOW TO AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM:
UNSOLICITED CONTACT FROM SO-CALLED "OFFICIALS":
Be suspicious if someone contacts you claiming to be from ICASA or another authority and asks for personal details.
Legitimate organisations do not request sensitive information over phone calls or messages.
THREATS OF URGENCY:
Scammers use fear tactics, such as saying your number is linked to crime or that you will face legal action.
Legitimate authorities do not threaten individuals in this manner.
REQUEST FOR PERSONAL OR BANKING INFORMATION:
Never share ID numbers, banking details, or passwords over the phone or via email.
ICASA and other legitimate agencies will never ask for this.
SUSPICIOUS CONTACT DETAILS:
Scammers often use unofficial email addresses, private numbers, or WhatsApp messages instead of proper company domains (e.g., @icasa.org.za).
Always verify the sender's credentials through official channels.
VERIFY BEFORE ACTING:
If you receive such a call, do not engage.
Hang up and contact ICASA directly at their official customer service number to verify if the call was legitimate.
If you believe you are being targeted, report the incident to SSS or law enforcement immediately.
EXAMPLE CASE:
A Pretoria businessman received a call from an individual claiming to be an ICASA official.
The scammer informed him that his number was linked to an international fraud syndicate and that ICASA needed to verify his identity.
The caller demanded his ID number and banking details, warning that failure to comply would block his phone line.
Fortunately, the businessman was aware of fraud tactics and immediately ended the call.
He contacted ICASA directly and confirmed that no such verification was required.
By staying alert, he avoided becoming a victim of identity theft.
SSS urge all South Africans to remain vigilant and report suspicious calls, emails, or messages to authorities.
Criminals rely on fear and deception, but with awareness and caution, you can protect yourself from falling victim.
Contact Specialised Security Services immediately for security concerns or fraud investigations.
Stay safe. Stay informed.
