Keep communication open and age-appropriate.

Safety education should be ongoing and reinforced regularly—not treated as a once-off conversation.

AT SCHOOL:

GETTING TO AND FROM SCHOOL:

  • THE ROUTE:

    • Walk or travel the school route with your child beforehand.

    • Familiarise them with the path and identify safe landmarks such as libraries, shops, or trusted neighbours’ homes, as well as potential hazards.

  • BUDDY SYSTEM:

    • Encourage children to walk or cycle with a friend or group whenever possible.

    • There is safety in numbers.

  • BUS SAFETY:

    • Teach children to remain seated, keep aisles clear, and follow the driver’s instructions.

    • They should wait for the bus in a visible, safe area—not in the road.

  • STRANGER AWARENESS:

    • Educate without instilling fear.

    • Use role-play to practise scenarios.

    • Teach children never to approach a stranger’s vehicle or accept rides, gifts, or favours.

    • A clear rule is: “You do not have to talk to adults you do not know. It is okay to ignore them and move quickly to a teacher or a safe place.”

  • DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP:

    • Understand the school’s procedures and ensure your child knows exactly where and with whom they are to be collected.

DURING THE SCHOOL DAY:

  • OPEN COMMUNICATION:

    • Speak daily about their experiences.

    • Ask about friends, activities, and recess.

    • Be attentive to signs of emotional, social, or academic stress.

  • BULLYING AWARENESS:

    • Teach the difference between teasing and bullying.

    • Encourage children to report bullying—whether directed at them or others—to a trusted adult immediately.

    • Reinforce that reporting is not tattling.

  • TRUSTED ADULTS:

    • Help your child identify two to three trusted adults at school (e.g., teacher, counsellor, nurse, coach) they can approach for help.

  • BODY SAFETY:

    • Use correct anatomical terminology.

    • Teach that their body belongs to them and no one may touch them in a way that makes them uncomfortable.

    • A simple guideline: areas covered by underwear are private.

  • DRILL AWARENESS:

    • Explain the purpose of fire, lockdown, and emergency drills.

    • Emphasise listening to the teacher and remaining calm.

DIGITAL SAFETY (INCLUDING AT SCHOOL):

  • SCHOOL-ISSUED DEVICES:

    • Familiarise yourself with the school’s acceptable-use policy.

    • Remind children that these devices are for learning and may be monitored.

  • PERSONAL DEVICES:

    • If permitted, set clear rules about when and where devices may be used.

    • Encourage children to keep devices securely stored when not in use.

SAFETY AT HOME (BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL):

FOR CHILDREN HOME ALONE:

(Only if age-appropriate and legally permitted)

  • CHECK-IN ROUTINE:

    • Establish a mandatory check-in as soon as they arrive home (call or message).

  • THE "NEVER LIST":

    • Never open the door to anyone not pre-approved.

    • Never tell callers or visitors they are home alone.

  • KEY SAFETY:

    • Avoid hiding keys under mats or pots.

    • Consider a lockbox.

  • EMERGENCY INFORMATION:

    • Post a visible list including emergency services, parents’ contact details, trusted neighbours, and the family doctor.

    • Practise what to say in an emergency call (full name, address, and situation).

  • APPLIANCE RULES:

    • Set clear guidelines for appliance use.

    • When unsure, pre-prepared snacks are safest.

GENERAL HOME SAFETY:

  • INTERNET AND DEVICE RULES:

    • Keep computers and tablets in shared spaces.

    • Use parental controls, but prioritise ongoing discussions about online risks, including not sharing personal information and reporting concerning interactions.

  • SOCIAL MEDIA:

    • For older children, explain the permanence of digital content.

    • Use privacy settings and ensure connections are limited to people they know in real life.

  • SAFE SPACES:

    • Identify nearby homes where your child can go if they feel unsafe or lose their key.

  • AFTER-SCHOOL PLANS:

    • Ensure children know their daily plan—home, activities, or friends’ houses.

    • Confirm arrangements directly with other parents.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE: COMMUNICATION AND TRUST

  • NO-SECRETS POLICY:

    • Explain the difference between surprises (temporary and positive) and secrets (something that feels wrong or must be hidden).

    • Assure children that they will never be in trouble for telling you something that makes them uncomfortable.

  • LISTEN FIRST, REACT SECOND:

    • When a child shares a concern, thank them and remain calm.

    • Overreacting can discourage future communication.

  • EMPOWERMENT:

    • Teach children that it is acceptable to say “no,” to leave uncomfortable situations, and to seek help immediately.

    • Personal safety always comes before politeness.

By combining preparation, open dialogue, and confidence-building, parents create layered protection for children—

both physically and emotionally—throughout the school day.

KEY ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS:

1. COMMUNICATE CONSISTENTLY:

  • Have daily, informal conversations.

  • Ask open-ended questions such as: “What was the best part of your day?” or “Did anything feel uncomfortable?”

  • Normalise reporting of anything that causes fear, embarrassment, or uncertainty.

  • Practise “what-if” scenarios and provide clear scripts such as: “Stop. I don’t like that,” and “I’m going to tell a teacher.”

2. PARTNER PROACTIVELY WITH THE SCHOOL:

  • Understand school safety policies and emergency protocols.

  • Maintain regular communication with teachers and staff.

  • Familiarise yourself with security measures on campus.

  • Ensure your contact details are always current and understand how the school communicates emergencies.

3. EMPOWER YOUR CHILD WITH KNOWLEDGE:

  • Ensure they know essential personal information.

  • Discuss digital safety and cyberbullying.

  • Reinforce body autonomy and boundaries.

  • Support social-emotional development, resilience, and conflict-resolution skills.

4. BE OBSERVANT AND TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS:

  • Watch for behavioural changes that may signal distress.

  • Note unsafe physical environments and report concerns.

  • Speak up if something feels wrong—your advocacy matters.

5. TAKE PRACTICAL SAFETY MEASURES:

  • Update emergency contact information annually.

  • Establish clear transport and collection procedures, including password systems.

  • Stay involved through volunteering or school committees.

  • Secure potentially dangerous items at home, including firearms, in accordance with the law.

IF A PROBLEM ARISES:

  1. LISTEN AND VALIDATE: Stay calm and thank your child for telling you.

  2. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING: Record details and retain communications.

  3. FOLLOW THE CHAIN OF COMMAND: Start with the teacher, then escalate if necessary.

  4. SEEK EXTERNAL SUPPORT: Engage professionals or authorities when warranted.

The objective is not to raise an anxious child, but a prepared and confident one.

Strong communication, active parental involvement, and teaching children to trust their instincts form a powerful safety net—allowing them to focus on learning, growing, and thriving at school.
