South Africa is facing a sharp rise in highly organised crimes involving the use of illegal signal jammers.

These electronic devices, once limited to the tech-savvy underworld, are now being used with alarming frequency in everyday environments, from shopping malls to private homes.

Signal jamming is no longer a rare tactic — it has become one of the most common tools in criminal operations,

particularly in vehicle theft, hijackings, and follow-home robberies.

EXAMPLE CASE: ARMED ROBBERY FOILED IN JOHANNESBURG:

  • In a recent breakthrough, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department intercepted a suspicious Renault Kwid on the M1 North near Corlett Drive.

  • Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered:

    • A live firearm.

    • A toy gun, often used to reduce suspicion while still intimidating victims.

    • A signal jammer device.

    • Live ammunition.

    • Several mobile phones, likely stolen or used for coordinating the crime.

  • This vehicle was reportedly involved in an earlier armed robbery, underscoring the recurring use of the same getaway vehicles and criminal tools.

  • The suspects were arrested and handed over to Bramley SAPS for further investigation.

WHAT IS A SIGNAL JAMMER:

  • A signal jammer is a prohibited device that emits radio waves to disrupt or block wireless communication.

  • Criminals use them to interfere with:

    • Car remote locking systems.

    • Home alarm and panic buttons.

    • GPS tracking devices.

    • Mobile phones.

  • With a jammer active nearby, you may think your car is locked or your alarm is armed, when in fact, it is not.

  • This makes victims easy targets without them even realising it.

WHERE DO CRIMINALS GET SIGNAL JAMMERS:

  • Despite their illegality, these devices are widely accessible through:

    • Black market electronics traders

    • Online platforms and marketplaces disguised as “gadget” suppliers

    • Telegram and WhatsApp groups selling "covert equipment"

    • Smuggling routes from neighbouring countries

  • Devices often come disguised as everyday items like:

    • USB chargers

    • Bluetooth speakers

    • Power banks

    • Car phone holders

  • This makes them easy to carry, conceal, and operate without raising suspicion.

MODUS OPERANDI OF CRIMINALS USING SIGNAL JAMMERS:

  • Criminals use signal jammers in a range of scenarios, including:

    • OUTSIDE SHOPPING MALLS AND BANKS:

      • When you press your key fob, you hear a beep, but your car does not lock.

      • Criminals then access your unlocked vehicle moments later.

    • IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS:

      • During follow-home robberies, jammers are used to block alarm systems, disable electric gates, or prevent panic buttons from alerting private security.

    • AT HIJACK POINTS:

    • Jammers may be used near intersections or driveways, stopping victims from activating panic or tracking systems in critical moments.

  • These crimes are usually well-coordinated, involving:

    • Spotters who identify vulnerable victims (especially those leaving banks or malls).

    • Getaway drivers in common car models to blend in (e.g., VW Polo, Toyota Corolla, Renault Kwid).

    • Use of fake or cloned license plates.

    • Toy firearms to appear less threatening during the initial approach.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR VEHICLE:

  • DOUBLE-CHECK LOCKING:

    • Never trust the beep alone.

    • Always physically check your door handles before walking away.

  • INVEST IN ADVANCED SECURITY:

    • Install an anti-jamming alarm system that sounds when jamming is detected.

    • Use a GPS tracker that alerts your phone or security provider when disconnected.

    • Request manual locking options for critical systems such as gates or garage doors.

  • STAY ALERT IN PUBLIC SPACES:

    • Park only in well-lit, monitored areas

    • Avoid leaving any visible valuables inside your car — even clothing, bags, or loose change can be tempting.

  • JOIN THE LOCAL CPF OR SECURITY GROUP:

    • Most areas have WhatsApp or Telegram community safety groups.

    • These are ideal for sharing real-time crime alerts, vehicle descriptions, and suspicious activity.

  • REPORT ALL INCIDENTS IMMEDIATELY:

    • Suspicious persons loitering near parked cars.

    • Vehicles circling shopping centres.

    • Individuals handling strange "chargers" or "gadgets" inside cars.

    • Report to the SAPS Crime Stop: 08600 10111

    • Anonymous tip-offs can also be submitted via the SAPS app or Crime Line.

HIGH RISK VEHICLE MODELS:

  • Be particularly cautious if you see the following models acting suspiciously:

    • Renault Kwid.

    • VW Polo.

    • Toyota Corolla.

    • Nissan Almera.

    • Chevrolet Aveo.

  • These are often chosen for their low-profile look, affordability, and ease of disguise.

Signal jammers are invisible, silent, and deadly effective — unless you are informed.

The best way to beat these tactics is to stay educated, remain alert, and spread the word.

  • Share this message with your family, friends, domestic workers, and colleagues.

  • Ask your car insurer about anti-jammer tracking systems and theft coverage.

  • Equip your home and vehicle with multi-layered defences.

Signal jamming thrives in ignorance.

But through community action, awareness, and pressure on tech suppliers and law enforcement,

we can disrupt this criminal advantage.
