A passkey is a modern, more secure replacement for passwords, using cryptography to let you log in to apps and
websites with your biometrics (fingerprint, face scan) or device PIN instead of a typed password.
Unlike passwords that can be stolen or leaked, passkeys are resistant to phishing and other attacks, with a private cryptographic key stored on your device and a public key on the website, creating a unique and secure link between them. Passkeys sync across your devices via a password manager, making them convenient and robust against loss.
Please refer to our initial project explaining the advantages of changing from passwords to passkeys:
1. CHECK DEVICE AND PLATFORM COMPATIBILITY:
Make sure your device and browser support passkeys:
Apple devices: iOS 16+, macOS Ventura+ (Safari, iCloud Keychain)
Android devices: Android 9+ with Google Chrome or supported apps
Windows PCs: Windows 11 with Microsoft Edge or supported apps
Ensure your device is signed into your main account (Apple ID, Google account, Microsoft account).
2. UPDATE YOUR SOFTWARE:
iPhone/iPad: Settings → General → Software Update → Install latest iOS/iPadOS
Mac: Apple menu → About This Mac → Software Update → Install latest macOS
Android: Settings → System → Software Update → Install latest version
Windows: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates → Install
3. ENABLE PASSKEYS IN ACCOUNT SETTINGS:
Open the website or app that supports passkeys (e.g., Google, Apple ID, Microsoft).
Navigate to Security Settings → Look for Passkeys, Passwordless Sign-in, or Two-Factor Authentication settings.
Select Add Passkey or Enable Passkey.
4. AUTHENTICATE TO CREATE A PASSKEY:
The platform will prompt you to authenticate using your device’s secure method:
iPhone/iPad/Mac: Face ID, Touch ID, or device password
Android: Fingerprint, face unlock, or PIN
Windows: Windows Hello (PIN, face, fingerprint)
This will create a unique cryptographic key pair stored securely on your device.
The private key never leaves your device, making it more secure than passwords.
5. CONFIRM PASSKEY REGISTRATION:
You may be asked to confirm your passkey by re-authenticating or verifying via your email or phone.
Once confirmed, the passkey is linked to your account and can be used for passwordless login.
6. USING YOUR PASSKEY TO LOG IN:
When logging in to a supported website/app:
Enter your email/username.
Select “Use Passkey”.
Authenticate using your device’s biometric or PIN.
You’re logged in without ever typing a password.
7. BACKUP YOUR PASSKEYS:
For iCloud (Apple): Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Keychain → Ensure Keychain is on
For Google/Android: Settings → Google → Manage your Google Account → Security → Passkeys → Sync
For Windows: Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Passwordless account → Enable backup
This ensures you can recover your passkey if you lose your device.
IMPORTANT:
Use passkeys only on trusted devices.
Keep biometric/fingerprint security enabled.
You can delete or revoke passkeys in your account’s security settings if a device is lost.
