International estimates place the annual global cost of identity fraud at hundreds of billions of dollars, with losses increasing every year as more financial and government services move online.
A stolen identity is not simply used once. Criminal syndicates often sell complete identity profiles multiple times to different criminal groups.
These complete identity packages—commonly referred to in cybercriminal circles as "Fullz"—contain enough verified information for criminals to impersonate a victim across multiple institutions.
The more complete the profile, the more valuable it becomes.
HOW CRIMINALS STEAL YOUR IDENTITY:
Most victims never realise their information has been compromised until financial losses or legal problems arise.
Criminals obtain identity information through numerous methods.
1. PHISHING EMAILS:
Fraudsters send convincing emails pretending to represent:
Banks.
SARS.
Insurance companies.
Courier services.
Medical aid providers.
Government departments.
Victims are encouraged to "verify" or "update" their information, unknowingly handing it directly to criminals.
2. SMISHING (SMS FRAUD):
Victims receive SMS messages claiming there is:
A banking problem.
A SARS refund.
A courier delivery.
An unpaid traffic fine.
A prize waiting to be claimed.
Clicking the embedded link often leads to fake websites designed to harvest personal information.
3. VISHING (VOICE PHISHING):
Telephone fraud has become increasingly sophisticated.
Criminals impersonate:
SAPS investigators.
Bank fraud departments.
Insurance investigators.
Government officials.
Technical support personnel.
Victims are manipulated into providing confidential information during what appears to be a legitimate conversation.
4. CORPORATE DATA BREACHES:
Large companies, retailers, financial institutions, healthcare providers, and government departments continue to experience cyberattacks that expose millions of customer records.
Once stolen, this information often circulates within criminal networks for years and may be sold repeatedly on underground marketplaces.
5. SOCIAL MEDIA OVERSHARING:
Social media has become one of the easiest sources of intelligence for criminals.

Schools attended.
