PROJECT:THE DANGERS OF DRINK SPIKING

"Spiking drinks" refers to the act of adding substances, typically drugs or alcohol, to someone's beverage without their knowledge or consent. This can occur in social settings, parties, or bars and is often done with the intention of incapacitating or taking advantage of the person who consumes the spiked drink. The substances used for spiking can include illicit drugs, sedatives, date rape drugs, or even additional amounts of alcohol.

THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT IS INTENDED TO BE SHARED. PLEASE DO SO.

THE OBJECTIVE OF SSS IS TO SHARE INFORMATION, TO EDUCATE AND FOREWARN THE PUBLIC.

  • A person's drink can be spiked to make them more vulnerable for a variety of reasons, including theft or sexual assault.

  • Spiking of drinks is rife and can happen at parties, corporate functions, pubs or restaurants.

  • The modus operandi of a perpetrator is to distract the victim and then slip a substance into the unsuspecting victim's drink.

  • Rohypnol is often used as a date rape drug, but other substances are also used.

  • Unfortunately, some of the substances that are used are difficult to detect without tests being conducted, as they are colourless and tasteless.

PHYSICAL EFFECTS:

A spiked drink may lead to one or more of the following:

  • Dizziness.

  • Nausea or vomiting.

  • Tiredness.

  • Blurred vision.

  • Difficulty walking.

  • Disorientation.

  • Loss of memory.

DANGERS OF CONSUMPTION OF SPIKED DRINKS:

Loss of Control:

  • The victim may experience a loss of control over their body and actions, making them vulnerable to exploitation or harm.

Impaired Judgment:

  • Spiked drinks can impair judgment and coordination, leading to accidents, injuries, or risky behaviours.

Sexual Assault:

  • Drink spiking is often associated with sexual assault, as the incapacitated individual becomes an easy target for perpetrators.

Health Risks:

  • Depending on the substance used, there can be severe health risks, including overdose, allergic reactions, or interactions with other medications the person may be taking.

TO SAFEGUARD AGAINST DRINK SPIKING, CONSIDER AGAINST THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS:

Watch Your Drink:

  • Never leave your drink unattended.

  • If you do, get a new one rather than returning to the original.

Do not Accept Drinks from Strangers:

  • Avoid accepting drinks from people you do not know or trust and be cautious even with drinks from friends if you do not see the drinks being prepared.

Keep an Eye on the Bartender:

  • If you are at a bar, keep an eye on the bartender while your drink is being prepared.

  • Make sure they open new bottles and use sealed containers.

  • Rather avoid ice in your drinks as this can also be contaminated.

Travel in Groups:

  • Going out with friends provides an additional layer of safety.

  • Look out for each other and have a designated driver to ensure everyone gets home safely.

Trust Your Instincts:

  • If something does not feel right or if you start feeling unusually intoxicated, seek help immediately.

  • Do not hesitate to ask a friend or a trusted person for assistance.

• Educate Yourself:

  • Be aware of the signs and symptoms of drink spiking.

  • If you suspect that your drink has been tampered with, do not consume it, and seek help if necessary.

Use Personal Drink Guards:

  • There are products available, such as drink coasters or caps, that can help protect your drink from potential contamination

Remember that being vigilant and proactive can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to drink spiking.

If you suspect someone has been a victim, seek medical attention and report the incident to the appropriate authorities.

Drink spiking is illegal and goes hand in hand with rape, abuse, sexual assault and violence.
Unfortunately, it is often seen as a minor offence rather than a serious violation of a person’s safety.
