PROJECT: THE REAL CRIMES AFFLICTING CHILDREN EXPOSED TO DIGITAL PLATFORMS (PART 3)

CHILDREN ON SOCIAL MEDIA ARE NOT JUST “ONLINE” —

THEY ARE OFTEN EXPOSED TO ACTIVE CRIMINAL THREATS

Specialised Security Services strongly warns parents, schools, grandparents, and guardians:

A child with unrestricted social media access is not merely consuming content.

That child may be entering direct or indirect contact with predators, extortionists, traffickers, fraudsters,

cyberbullies, and organised online criminals.

In the New Mexico case against Meta, the evidence included allegations that Facebook and Instagram

had become venues where predators could contact minors and where safety systems failed to adequately protect children.

The public must now stop asking whether social media is “appropriate.”

The real question is:

How much criminal exposure are we allowing before we act?

THE PRIMARY CRIMES AFFLICTING CHILDREN EXPOSED TO SOCIAL MEDIA:

1. ONLINE GROOMING AND SEXUAL PREDATION:

  • Predators use social media to:

    • identify vulnerable children,

    • build trust,

    • isolate them emotionally,

    • create secrecy,

    • introduce sexualised conversation,

    • and eventually coerce explicit content or physical meetings.

  • They often look for:

    • loneliness,

    • family conflict,

    • emotional distress,

    • absent supervision,

    • a need for validation,

    • or children posting personal details.

  • This is one of the most serious and fastest-escalating risks.

2. SEXTORTION OF CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS:

  • Sextortion often follows a simple but devastating pattern:

    • A criminal pretends to be a teenager or an attractive peer.

    • The child is manipulated into sending a photo or joining a video call.

    • The criminal captures the material.

    • Blackmail begins.

  • The threats are immediate:

    • “Pay me.”

    • “Send more.”

    • “Do what I say.”

    • “I will send this to your school, family, church, sports team, or friends.”

  • This is not a “private mistake.”

  • It is extortion, coercion and it is organised criminal conduct.

3. CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL (CSAM) CREATION AND DISTRIBUTION:

  • When a child is groomed or coerced into sending intimate content, that material can become:

    • copied,

    • traded,

    • redistributed,

    • archived,

    • resold,

    • or used for repeated blackmail.

  • This is one of the most catastrophic forms of long-term victimisation because the child may be re-victimised for years.

4. CYBERBULLYING, DIGITAL HARASSMENT, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE:

  • Children can be subjected to:

    • fake profiles,

    • humiliation pages,

    • edited images,

    • sexual rumours,

    • social exclusion,

    • doxxing,

    • public shaming,

    • threats,

    • and group-based harassment.

  • Unlike traditional bullying, it can be:

    • constant,

    • anonymous,

    • viral,

    • permanent,

    • and visible to an unlimited audience.

  • The emotional damage can be profound and sometimes fatal.

5. IDENTITY THEFT, IMPERSONATION, AND DIGITAL FRAUD:

  • Children and teenagers often unknowingly disclose:

    • full names,

    • dates of birth,

    • school names,

    • suburbs,

    • email addresses,

    • passwords,

    • parent contact details,

    • or photographs revealing personal information.

  • Criminals can use this for:

    • account takeovers,

    • phishing,

    • SIM-swap social engineering,

    • impersonation,

    • extortion,

    • or fraud against the child and family.

6. LOCATION EXPOSURE, STALKING, AND REAL-WORLD TARGETING:

  • Children often reveal:

    • where they go to school,

    • where they train,

    • which shopping centres they visit,

    • their sports schedules,

    • family vehicles,

    • home layouts,

    • and daily movement patterns.

  • In South Africa, where targeted crime, kidnapping, extortion, stalking, and opportunistic criminal surveillance are serious realities, this becomes a direct family security threat.

  • A child’s careless post can become a criminal’s reconnaissance tool.

7. HUMAN TRAFFICKING RECRUITMENT AND LURING:

  • Traffickers do not always begin with force.

  • They often begin with:

    • compliments,

    • gifts,

    • fake modelling offers,

    • emotional dependency,

    • romance,

    • lifestyle promises,

    • job offers,

    • “rescuer” behaviour,

    • and gradual control.

  • A child who feels unseen at home can become deeply vulnerable to this tactic.

8. NORMALISATION OF CRIME, VIOLENCE, SEXUAL DEVIANCE, AND DANGEROUS CHALLENGES:

  • Algorithm-driven platforms can expose children to:

    • violence,

    • criminal bravado,

    • theft challenges,

    • reckless stunts,

    • cruelty content,

    • drug normalisation,

    • sexual exploitation themes,

    • and dangerous peer pressure.

  • This can desensitise children and shift their understanding of what is “normal,” “funny,” “acceptable,” or “popular.”

  • That is not entertainment, but it is behavioural conditioning.

Parents must understand this with absolute clarity:

Children on social media are not just “watching videos.”

They are being observed, profiled, influenced, manipulated, and in many cases deliberately targeted.

The crime risks are real.

The victims are real.

The trauma is real.

And once a child is trapped in grooming, sextortion, or digital exploitation,

the emotional and evidentiary damage can be severe.
