PROJECT: THE TRUTH ABOUT FIREWORKS AND ANIMALS

FOR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION

The annual spectacle of fireworks and crackers is not a celebration for all.

While marketed as harmless fun, the reality is a period of sheer terror, injury, and death for countless

domestic and wild animals. The argument for their "legitimacy" based on tradition or

temporary human enjoyment is morally bankrupt when weighed against the profound and preventable suffering they inflict.

The dangers are severe and widespread. The sudden, explosive noises trigger panic attacks in animals, which have more sensitive hearing. This terror leads to devastating consequences: pets bolt in blind fear, often getting hit by cars or becoming irretrievably lost. Wildlife, such as birds, flee nests in disarray, and animals like hedgehogs suffer cardiac arrest.

The psychological trauma can lead to long-term anxiety, phobias, and behavioural changes in our pets.

Furthermore, the physical hazards from ingestion of spent fireworks, burns from mishandled devices,

and the pollution of ecosystems with toxic heavy metals present a clear and present danger.

This Must Stop. Our Animals Need Your Help.

We call upon every compassionate citizen to recognise this issue for what it is: the sanctioned infliction of suffering.

Support the organisations on the front lines, dealing with the terrified, lost, and injured casualties of these "celebrations."

  • Please support your local SPCA or the Domestic Animal Welfare Organisations.

  • South African National SPCA:

  • To find and support your closest local SPCA or reputable animal welfare group (DBV), please visit the NSPCA website for a directory of affiliated societies.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A STRAY OR TERRIFIED ANIMAL:

  • APPROACH WITH CAUTION:

    • A scared animal may bite.

    • Move slowly, speak softly, and avoid direct eye contact.

  • CHECK FOR IDENTIFICATION:

    • Look for a collar with a tag.

  • SECURE THE ANIMAL:

    • If it is safe to do so, contain the animal in a secure, quiet space (a room, a yard on a lead, or a carrier).

  • REPORT IMMEDIATELY:

    • To your local SPCA (find their number via the NSPCA website).

    • To your local municipality's law enforcement or animal control unit.

    • To nearby veterinary clinics in case the owner has reported a lost pet.

    • Use community platforms: Post a clear photo on local neighbourhood Facebook groups or on websites like "Lost and Found Pets South Africa."

  • PROVIDE BASIC CARE:

    • Offer water and, if you have appropriate food, a small meal. Keep them away from further noise and stress.

Choosing silent celebrations, advocating for by-law changes, and supporting animal welfare are acts of true community spirit. This festive season, let compassion be louder than any explosion.
