False Social media warning content is spreading misinformation and cultivating a
false sense of fear in uninformed receivers.
When unconfirmed or false information is spread on social media, it often leads to fear
and panic in the minds of uninformed receivers of such content.
The content that is spread and believed most often on social media includes warnings
about technical hacks on mobile phones.
The reason why these warnings get such a massive reaction is because the people who receive these warnings tend to believe the content owing to a general lack of knowledge about technology, not being able to differentiate between what is possible and what is not possible especially considering the increase in cybercrime over the past few years.
When some of these warning messages are dissected, we can see that they often contain a mixture of true and false information.
EXAMPLE:
"Sim card fraud is on the rise; warning: do not press 1 when you get a call asking you to press 1
if you had the Covid vaccine, because once you press 1, the hackers will empty
your bank account through your sim card."
In the warning message mentioned above, it is true that sim card fraud is on the rise, but it is false that someone can empty your bank account by a simple interactive message response.
Banking application security has been increasing over the past few years, and even though fraudsters used to be able to perform a fraudulent sim swap and access a victim's bank account through the sim card in the past, it is not quite that easy anymore. This has improved after the deployment of biometric verification methods.
EXAMPLE:
Because these warning messages contain a hint of truth, the receiver is more likely to believe the entire message.
What makes this false information system so dangerous, is that it leads to unhealthy paranoia in the public.
We urge the public to always consider the validity and authenticity of information received before
simply forwarding it to the next person.
The spreading of false information can
only be combatted if the public confirms information before forwarding it.
