Protecting your passwords is essential for ensuring your online accounts' safety and security.
It is critical to prevent unauthorised access to your accounts.
IMPORTANT:
Your password should be a minimum of 12 characters long, preferably 14 characters.
Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers.
It should not be a word that can be found in a dictionary or the name of a person, character, product, or organisation.
Your new password should be substantially different from your previous ones.
Make sure it is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Consider using password generators.
If a criminal steals your account information from one site, they will try to use those credentials on hundreds of other well-known websites, such as banking, social media, or online shopping, hoping you have reused the password elsewhere.
This is called a "Credential stuffing attack, " and is widespread.
Credential stuffing is a cyberattack method in which attackers use lists of compromised user credentials to breach a system.
The attack uses bots for automation and scale, assuming that many users reuse usernames and passwords across multiple services.
SECURE YOUR PASSWORDS:
Never share your password with anyone, not even a close family member, a religious leader, or a financial advisor.
Never send your password anywhere by email or instant messaging.
Use a unique, separate password for each website to prevent criminals from using stolen credentials on other sites.
Using a password manager to handle multiple passwords securely is advisable.
Store written passwords in a secure location, away from the electronic devices they are supposed to protect.
Change passwords immediately if an account is suspected to be compromised.
Utilise a password manager with a password monitor feature to alert you of any compromised passwords.
Whenever possible, enable multi-factor authentication to add an extra layer of security to your accounts.
When asked to create answers to security questions, give a completely unrelated answer but something that is easy for you to remember.
For example, if the question is "Where were you born?" you might answer "Yellow."
Answers like these can not be found by trolling Twitter or Facebook.
Your answers should make sense to you and be easy to remember.
NEVER TRUST TO THE EXTENT THAT YOU ARE TRICKED INTO REVEALING YOUR PASSWORDS:
It is easy to exploit human nature and trick unsuspecting victims into revealing private information.
It is essential to be cautious of requests for sensitive information, even if they seem to be from a trusted source.
For example, be wary of emails or calls asking for your password or other personal details.
Read our previous projects regarding this phenomenon called phishing:
Never share your password in response to an email or phone call, even if it seems to be from a legitimate company or person.
Use trusted links to access websites, especially when clicked from unsolicited emails, social media, or text messages.
If you are unsure about a request, it is best to visit the bank's official website or service directly by using your bookmark or typing the legitimate address yourself.
Remain vigilant against phishing scams and social engineering tactics aimed at tricking you into divulging sensitive information. Exercise caution when responding to unexpected requests for passwords or personal data, even if seemingly from familiar sources. Always access websites through trusted links and channels, and verify the legitimacy of communications before disclosing any sensitive information.
