The online and digital world offers children a playground of endless possibilities, but many unseen dangers
lurk in this vast expanse. Vault applications, designed to conceal photos, videos, and other sensitive data,
pose a significant and growing threat to children's online safety.
These seemingly harmless tools can create a hidden digital landscape where risky behaviours,
cyberbullying, and exposure to inappropriate content flourish, all shielded from parental oversight and control.
Understanding the potential consequences of Vault apps is crucial for protecting children in a world
where technological and digital advancements are increasing rapidly.
Vault apps are designed to deceive.
They often disguise themselves as unassuming apps
with icons that do not reveal their true function.
Here are some common disguises:
CALCULATOR:
This is a popular disguise as it provides a
seemingly harmless app on the home screen.
On the app store:
After installation:
MUSIC PLAYER:
Music is a common app and a vault app
disguised as one, will easily blend in.

THE DANGERS:
Once you launch the app, you will usually be prompted to enter a password or use fingerprint/face recognition to unlock the real app hidden behind the disguise. The vault itself will typically have a clean interface to manage your hidden photos, videos, and other files.
Vault apps allow children to hide their online activities from parents.
This secrecy can mask dangerous behaviours like cyberbullying, sexting, or interactions with online predators.
Without parental awareness, it becomes difficult to intervene and protect children from harm.
The ability to conceal and hide files behind a password can make vault apps attractive for storing explicit photos, videos, or messages encountered online.
Exposure to such inappropriate content negatively impacts a child's emotional and mental well-being.
The password protection offered by vault apps can give children a false sense of security.
They might believe their hidden files are inaccessible, making them more likely to engage in risky online behaviour without realising the potential consequences.
HOW TO IDENTIFY VAULT APPS ON YOUR CHILD'S DEVICE:
Disguised Icons:
Be wary of apps with generic or unrelated icons, especially those that do not seem to match the app's name.
For instance, an app disguised as a calculator might have an icon that looks like a simple math symbol.
Functionality Inconsistencies:
If an app seems poorly designed, has limited features, or crashes frequently, it could be a vault app hiding its true functionality.
A legitimate calculator app, for example, should function smoothly and offer basic calculation features.
Battery Drain:
Vault apps running in the background can consume excessive battery power, draining the phone's battery unusually quickly.
Monitor your child's device for unexplained battery drain, which could indicate the presence of a hidden vault app.
Duplicate Apps:
Look out for multiple apps with similar functionalities, such as two calculator apps or two gallery apps.
One of them could be a vault app disguised as a familiar app.
Unusual App Permissions:
Be cautious of apps requesting permissions that seem unnecessary for their apparent function.
For instance, a calculator app requesting access to your child's location or camera could be a red flag.
Check App Reviews:
Read reviews of apps that raise suspicion.
Negative reviews mentioning hidden features or unusual functionalities can be indicators of a vault app.
Maintaining open communication and trust is crucial for keeping your children safe online.
If you discover a vault app on your child's device, have an honest conversation about
online safety and responsible device usage.
There is also no problem with parents remotely monitoring a child's device
to ensure maximum safeguarding.
Multiple reliable remote monitoring and restriction apps, such as
KidsGuard and Google Family Link, are available.
