Misinformation on social media, particularly old news, voice clips, and videos, is being recirculated as current.
This can cause widespread panic, especially during sensitive times like riots, protests, or looting,
and disproportionately affects vulnerable groups like the elderly.
HOW AND WHY PEOPLE SPREAD OLD NEWS:
DELIBERATE INSTIGATORS:
Some individuals or groups could be intentionally gathering old material - videos, voice clips, or images from past unrest - and waiting for a moment similar to when it happened (like an anniversary or a tense period).
They then repost it to stir fear, confusion, or chaos.
This could be driven by motives like pushing a political agenda, destabilising communities, or simply causing trouble - like "pouring oil on the fire".
UNINTENTIONAL SPREADERS:
Others might stumble across old content, not realise it is outdated, and share it out of genuine concern or excitement.
This happens a lot when people do not check dates or sources, acting out of ignorance rather than malice.
AMPLIFIERS:
Once the content is out there, it spreads fast because people react emotionally - panic or anger makes them hit "share" without thinking. Social media algorithms also boost dramatic content, reaching more eyes quickly.
This mix of intentional bad actors and careless sharers creates a perfect storm. It wastes time, data, and emotional energy, especially for those already scared or on edge.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE SHARING:
To stop this cycle, individuals need to take responsibility before hitting send.
PAUSE AND CHECK:
Look at the post, video, or voice clip date.
If it is not explicitly current (e.g., no timestamp or clear context tying it to today), assume it might be old.
VERIFY THE SOURCE:
Does it come from a trusted news outlet or a random account?
Cross-check with a quick web search or look for official updates from local authorities or media.
LOOK FOR CLUES:
Old videos might show outdated details - weather, clothing, or landmarks that don't match the present.
Voice clips might reference events that do not align with now.
ASK AN EXPERT:
If you are unsure and it feels urgent, contact someone who can verify.
Contact Mr. Mike Bolhuis' Cybercrime team, which specialises in security and cyber issues, and could confirm whether something is legitimate or old news.

WHAT TO DO AFTER REALISING A POST IS OLD NEWS:
ALERT OTHERS:
Post a follow-up saying, "This is old news from [date/event]. Please don't spread it further." Be clear and direct.
EDUCATE:
Remind people to double-check before sharing.
Something simple like, "Let's not panic over old stuff - verify first," can stick with them.
REPORT IT:
On platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, or X, flag the content as misinformation so it is less likely to spread.
This is not just about individual responsibility - social media platforms could do more to flag old content, and authorities could run awareness campaigns during tense times. But for now, it is on everyday people to slow the spread.
By verifying first, contacting experts like Mike Bolhuis's team when in doubt, and calling out old news when you see it,
you are not just saving data or time. Panic spreads faster than facts, but facts can still win if people act smart.
