SUCCESS PROJECT: THE CONTINUED MAINTENANCE OF "DIE HELDE AKKER" AT VREDENDAL CEMETERY (PART 2)

The successful restoration of "Die Helde Akker" at the Vredendal Cemetery stands as a meaningful act of respect,
remembrance and preservation.
THIS PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN IN HONOUR OF TWO ELITE SOUTH AFRICAN SOLDIERS:
CPL. SERVAAS DE KOCK – 1 Parachute Battalion,
and CAPT. BRAHAM "KOKKIE" DE KOCK – Recces/Special Forces.
The restoration of this sacred area was not merely a physical clean-up or beautification project.
It was a personal and heartfelt act of remembrance, carried out with pride and deep respect for those who served.

MAINTENANCE AND RESTORATION OF “DIE HELDE AKKER”:
Mr Johan C. Thiart of Echo Company 82/84, 1 Parachute Battalion, who undertook the initial physical restoration of the site, also committed to regularly visiting and maintaining “Die Helde Akker” from his residence in Calvinia.
During a visit to the site in mid-September, Mr Thiart discovered that the security gate had been forced open and that litter had been left both inside and outside the memorial grounds. The garden was also severely overgrown, with weeds covering large areas of the site.
On 17 September, Mr Thiart, assisted by two workers, commenced the necessary cleaning and restoration work. The litter and accumulated waste were removed, the overgrown vegetation and weeds were cleared, and the damaged security gate was repaired and secured.
The restoration work took three days to complete. At the conclusion of the work, the memorial site had once again been cleaned, secured and restored to a dignified and well-maintained condition befitting a site of remembrance.
The maintenance and restoration work was funded by Mr Mike Bolhuis of Charlie Company 1979, 1 Parachute Battalion, who assumed responsibility for all expenditure and costs incurred in making the restoration possible.
The total cost of the work amounted to R7,480.00.
Our sincere thanks and appreciation are extended to Mr Johan C. Thiart for his continued commitment to the upkeep of “Die Helde Akker”, and to Mr Mike Bolhuis for providing the financial support required to complete the restoration and maintenance work.
Their contributions have helped ensure that this memorial site remains a dignified place of remembrance and honour for those commemorated there.

IN CONCLUSION REGARDING THIS PROJECT:
This project shows the respect, the brotherhood and remembrance of the South African Paratroopers (AIRBORNE, EX ALTO VINCIMUS and SECOND TO NONE CREDO).
The restoration of “Die Helde Akker” at Vredendal Cemetery is a clear example of what Paratroopers can achieve when they work together as a brotherhood.
Special acknowledgement and thanks are given to MR. JOHAN THIART of Echo Company 82/84, 1 Parachute Battalion,
for physically undertaking and completing the maintenance work.
Special thanks are also extended to MR. MIKE BOLHUIS for carrying the financial responsibility of the project.
