When did you last take the time to look at your child’s social media conversations?

  • Monitoring your child’s social media activity is an important step in promoting their safety, well-being, and responsible digital behaviour.

  • As children grow and become more independent online, it is essential to strike a healthy balance between supervision and respecting their privacy.

  • Effective digital parenting involves:

    • Open communication -  regular, honest conversations about online risks, appropriate behaviour, and peer pressure to help build trust and make children more likely to seek support when needed.

    • Age-appropriate boundaries when setting reasonable rules for screen time, privacy settings, and app usage that align with your child’s developmental stage, encouraging accountability and digital responsibility.

    • Education and awareness for teaching children about online safety, cyberbullying, scams, and the permanence of digital footprints empowering them to make informed decisions.

  • Rather than focusing solely on control, the goal is to guide and support your child in becoming a responsible and confident digital citizen.

Do you have evacuation plans in place at work and your home in case something goes wrong?

  • Being prepared for emergencies starts with having well-thought-out escape plans in place, both at home and in the workplace.

  • In critical situations such as fires, natural disasters, or security threats, knowing exactly what to do will save lives.

  • A strong emergency plan should include:

    • Clearly marked and accessible escape routes;

    • A designated meeting point where everyone can safely regroup and be accounted for.

    • Regular drills to ensure all family members or employees are familiar with the procedure.

    • Accessible emergency kits, including essential supplies like water, first aid, flashlights, and contact information.

Do you know how to correctly inform your clients of a change of banking details?

  • When informing clients of changes to your banking information, it is essential to do so in a way that is both secure and easy to understand.

  • To ensure trust and prevent fraud:

    • Use verified communication channels (e.g., official email addresses, secure portals, or direct phone calls) to share the update.

    • Avoid sending sensitive banking information via unsecured or unfamiliar platforms.

    • Clearly explain the reason for the change, what has been updated, and from when the new details will apply.

    • Warn clients about potential scams or phishing attempts, especially those impersonating your organisation.

    • Encourage clients to confirm the new banking details directly with your office before making any payments.

12 JUNE 2025

How exposed are you if your cell phone is lost or stolen?

  • Losing your phone or having it stolen can put you at serious risk of identity theft, unauthorised access to your bank accounts, privacy breaches, and exposure of sensitive personal data.

  • The extent of the risk largely depends on the security measures you have put in place.

  • Key safeguards that reduce vulnerability include:

    • Strong passcodes or PINs.

    • Biometric locks, such as fingerprint or facial recognition.

    • Encrypted storage for data protection.

    • Remote wipe capabilities to erase your phone’s content if it is lost.

  • Without these protections, a stolen phone could allow someone to impersonate you, access personal communications, drain your finances, or misuse your identity.

13 JUNE 2025

Are your doors locked while you’re driving around known crime hotspots?

  • Keeping your car doors locked while driving is a smart and effective safety habit, particularly when travelling through high-risk or unfamiliar areas.

  • This simple precaution will significantly reduce your vulnerability to carjackings, theft, and opportunistic attacks.

  • While many modern vehicles feature automatic locking systems, it is important to manually double-check that your doors are secured, especially when:

    • Driving alone.

    • Travelling after dark.

    • Stopping at intersections or in slow-moving traffic.

    • Entering areas known for higher crime rates.

  • Locked doors act as a deterrent, making it more difficult for potential criminals to gain quick access and decreasing the likelihood of being targeted.

  • Prioritising this small but critical action can greatly enhance your personal safety on the road.
