Specialised Security Services (SSS) has investigated countless cases involving fraud, extortion, domestic violence,
coercive control, financial exploitation, and emotional manipulation.
While many people associate crime with physical violence or theft, some of the most devastating harm
begins with psychological manipulation.
One of the most dangerous personalities an individual may encounter is someone displaying severe narcissistic traits.
Although not every self-centred or arrogant person has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, individuals
with pronounced narcissistic characteristics often leave a trail of emotional, financial, and social destruction.
Victims frequently lose their savings, careers, businesses, friendships, confidence, and, in some tragic cases, even their lives.
This is not simply a relationship issue—it can become a serious public safety concern.
WHAT IS A NARCISSIST?
A narcissist is generally characterised by an excessive sense of self-importance, an overwhelming need for admiration, a lack of empathy for others, and a belief that normal rules do not apply to them.
Many narcissists appear exceptionally charming when first encountered.
They often present themselves as:
Successful and influential.
Highly intelligent.
Charismatic and confident.
Compassionate and generous.
The "perfect" partner or friend.
However, this image frequently changes once they have gained trust and control over another person.
HOW THEY GAIN CONTROL:
Most victims do not realise they are being manipulated until they are deeply emotionally, socially, or financially invested.
The process often follows a recognisable pattern.
1. LOVE BOMBING:
The narcissist overwhelms the victim with:
Excessive affection.
Constant communication.
Expensive gifts.
Grand promises.
Rapid declarations of love.
Claims of being "soul mates."
Everything appears perfect.
2. ISOLATION:
Gradually, they begin distancing the victim from:
Family.
Friends.
Colleagues.
Professional advisers.
They often convince the victim that: "Nobody understands you except me." or "Your family is trying to destroy our relationship."
Isolation creates dependence.
3. CONTROL:
Control begins subtly before becoming more obvious.
Examples include:
Monitoring phone calls.
Demanding passwords.
Tracking locations.
Controlling finances.
Dictating clothing choices.
Restricting friendships.
Constant questioning.
Excessive jealousy.
The victim slowly loses independence.
4. GASLIGHTING:
Gaslighting is one of the most psychologically damaging forms of manipulation.
The narcissist repeatedly causes the victim to question their own memory, judgement, and reality.
Common examples include:
"I never said that."
"You're imagining things."
"You're crazy."
"Everyone agrees you're the problem."
"You're too sensitive."
Over time, victims lose confidence in their own perceptions.
WHY NARCISSISTS CAN BECOME A CRIMINAL RISK:
Not every narcissist commits crimes.
However, investigators frequently encounter individuals with severe narcissistic traits in cases involving:
Domestic violence.
Financial fraud.
Romance scams.
Identity theft.
Elder abuse.
Coercive control.
Stalking.
Cyber harassment.
Blackmail.
Extortion.
Child custody manipulation.
Business fraud.
Their overriding objective is often power, control, and personal gain.
When challenged or exposed, some may escalate to intimidation, harassment, or criminal conduct.
WARNING SIGNS:
Be cautious if someone:
Never accepts responsibility.
Blames everyone else.
Constantly lies.
Manipulates facts.
Lacks empathy.
Humiliates others.
Has numerous "crazy" ex-partners.
Controls finances.
Demands constant admiration.
Becomes aggressive when criticised.
Alternates between affection and cruelty.
Makes you feel guilty for everything.
One or two of these behaviours alone do not mean a person is a narcissist.
However, a persistent pattern of manipulative, controlling, and abusive behaviour should be taken seriously.
WHY VICTIMS STAY:
Many people ask: "Why didn't they just leave?"
The answer is rarely simple.
Victims often remain because of:
Fear.
Financial dependence.
Children.
Emotional trauma.
Isolation.
Hope that the person will change.
Threats.
Shame.
Loss of confidence.
Leaving such a relationship can be one of the most dangerous periods, particularly if the abusive individual feels they are losing control.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:
If you recognise these behaviours:
Trust your instincts.
Maintain contact with trusted family and friends.
Keep copies of important documents.
Protect your finances.
Document threatening behaviour.
Set firm personal boundaries.
Do not ignore repeated manipulation.
Seek professional legal or psychological assistance where appropriate.
If your safety is at risk, develop a safety plan before leaving.
Report criminal conduct to the appropriate authorities without delay.
THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA:
Modern technology has made narcissistic abuse even more dangerous.
Manipulative individuals may:
Monitor your online activity.
Demand access to your devices.
Impersonate you online.
Spread false information.
Use intimate photographs for blackmail.
Conduct smear campaigns to damage your reputation.
Harass victims through multiple social media platforms.
Digital abuse can continue long after a relationship has ended.

While narcissism itself is not a crime, manipulation, coercive control, fraud, intimidation, assault, extortion, harassment, identity theft, and cybercrime are criminal acts. Recognising the warning signs early may prevent years of emotional trauma and significant financial loss.
If you believe you are being manipulated or controlled, do not suffer in silence. Seek assistance from trusted family members, qualified professionals, legal advisers, or the relevant law enforcement authorities where criminal conduct is involved.
