Mr. Mike Bolhuis has spent more than four decades in the security industry.
Long before founding Specialised Security Services (SSS), he owned and operated a professional bouncer agency
that worked in some of the busiest and most high-profile nightclubs in South Africa.
He has seen nightlife at its best — and at its absolute worst.
What concerns Mr. Bolhuis today is not ordinary bar fights or isolated incidents.
What concerns him is the increasing exposure of ordinary, peace-loving members of the public to organised,
alcohol-fuelled violence carried out by biker gangs in social spaces that were never meant to become battlegrounds.
Ordinary People Are Not the Problem — They Are the Victims.
Families on holiday, couples enjoying dinner, groups of friends meeting to unwind — these are not high-risk individuals.
They are citizens exercising a basic freedom: the right to relax in public without fear.
Yet when biker-gang violence erupts, these people are instantly placed in danger.
From a security perspective, the danger is not only the violence itself, but the scale and mindset behind it.
These confrontations are often driven by numbers, intimidation, and dominance.
Mr. Bolhuis has personally witnessed situations in which a small group of patrons — two, five, or even ten people —
are suddenly confronted by 30 or more hardened individuals behaving as a unit.
In such moments, there is no balance. There is no fairness.
There is no restraint.
CASE STUDY: BOXING DAY IN JEFFREYS BAY INCIDENT
The Boxing Day incident in Jeffreys Bay is a clear example of how quickly a festive environment can descend into chaos.
What should have been a relaxed holiday atmosphere became a scene of panic when biker-related violence erupted in a public venue.
From reports and witness accounts, the pattern is familiar to anyone with real-world security experience: rapid escalation, indiscriminate aggression, and a complete disregard for who might get hurt.
When violence reaches this level, everything becomes a weapon.
Bottles, glasses, furniture, sharp objects — the environment itself is turned against the public.
Innocent bystanders are struck, trampled, or trapped simply because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time.
This is not accidental harm.
It is reckless, ruthless behaviour that shows little concern for human life.
WHY THESE INCIDENTS ARE SO DANGEROUS:
"Having managed nightclub security at the highest level, I can say this without hesitation:
biker-gang violence is fundamentally different from spontaneous altercations."
Mr. Mike Bolhuis
KEY RISK FACTORS:
Overwhelming numerical advantage.
Coordinated group behaviour.
A culture of intimidation and retaliation.
Alcohol acting as an accelerant.
No respect for neutral parties.
Once such a group decides to act, the situation moves beyond control faster than most venue security teams can respond.
THE FORGOTTEN CONSEQUENCE: TRAUMA
The physical injuries often make headlines.
The psychological damage rarely does:
Parents who had to shield their children.
Tourists who will never return.
Ordinary people who no longer feel safe in public spaces.
From a professional standpoint, this trauma is entirely preventable — yet it keeps repeating.
PRACTICAL ADVICE IN THESE INSTANCES:
While responsibility lies with perpetrators, the reality is that awareness saves lives. Based on decades of frontline experience, Mr. Bolhuis strongly advises the public to:
1. WATCH HOW GROUPS ENTER A VENUE:
Large, branded/uniformed or tightly bonded groups arriving together require attention.
2. ASSESS SECURITY PRESENCE IMMEDIATELY:
If security appears understaffed or passive, your risk increases.
3. ALWAYS KNOW YOUR EXITS:
Never sit where exit/escape routes are blocked or limited.
4. LEAVE EARLY IF THE ATMOSPHERE CHANGES:
Trust your instincts.
Early withdrawal prevents late regret.
5. NEVER ENGAGE, CHALLENGE OR RECORD:
Attention escalates aggression.
Disengagement protects you.
6. PROTECT THE VULNERABLE FIRST:
Children, elderly individuals, and non-confrontational companions must be prioritised.
A Matter of Public Safety — Not Image or Ego
This is not about demonising subcultures or creating fear.
It is about public safety, accountability, and the protection of innocent lives.
No holidaymaker should fear for their life while having dinner.
No family should be forced to flee a venue intended for enjoyment.
No citizen should become collateral damage in someone else’s show of force.
Mr. Bolhuis clearly states:
"When organised violence enters public spaces, everyone present is at risk."
Awareness, prevention, and decisive action are the only ways forward.
Until then, the public must remain vigilant — not paranoid, but prepared.
Your safety should never be the price you pay for a night out.
