PROJECT: FARM ATTACKS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Farm attacks in South Africa are not simply a rural problem.

They affect farmers, farm workers, families and communities —

and they raise serious questions about rural safety,

violent crime, policing and the protection of people living and working far from major urban centres.

Research covering 2019–2025 recorded an average

of approximately 6.32 farm attacks per week in South Africa.

That means farm attacks are occurring regularly

— not as isolated incidents.

The figures also show that the problem must be viewed

over a number of years rather than by looking at one isolated month.

That does not mean that every incident had the same circumstances or level of violence.

Each case must be investigated individually.

  • Farm attacks can involve:

    • Armed robbery.

    • Assault.

    • Serious violence.

    • Threats against farmers and farm workers.

    • Home invasions.

    • Theft of firearms, vehicles, livestock or other property.

    • Attacks on elderly or vulnerable people.

    • Kidnapping or hostage situations in some cases.

    • Murder in the most serious cases.

  • It is important not to assume that every farm attack is motivated by the same reason.

  • The circumstances and motives must be established through thorough investigation.

  • South Africa already faces extremely high levels of violent crime.

  • For people living on farms and smallholdings, emergency assistance can sometimes be further away because of distance, difficult terrain and limited policing resources.

  • A delayed response can have serious consequences.

  • This is why rural safety cannot be treated as an afterthought.

BEFORE EVERY ELECTION, ASK THE QUESTIONS:

Farm and rural safety should not become a political slogan.

The public should ask:

  • What is being done to protect rural communities?

  • How many detectives and police officers are available to investigate these cases?

  • How quickly are emergency services able to respond?

  • How many farm-attack cases result in arrests and successful prosecutions?

  • Are rural communities receiving adequate policing resources?

  • What is being done to prevent repeat attacks?

These are reasonable questions for any government.

Government has a responsibility to protect people living in South Africa — whether they live in a city, township, village, smallholding or on a farm.

At the same time, communities have a responsibility to work together, report suspicious activity and support lawful crime-prevention initiatives.

The solution cannot depend on one organisation or one community.

It requires cooperation between:

  • SAPS

  • Farmers

  • Farm Workers

  • Private Security

  • Community Safety Structures

  • Emergency Services

  • Prosecuting Authorities

  • Government

South Africa is a country with serious violent-crime challenges. Farmers and farm workers are part of South African society. Their safety matters.

A victim is a victim. Every life matters.

Rural communities should remain alert to:

  • Suspicious vehicles or persons.

  • Unusual activity around homes and farms.

  • Repeated surveillance of properties.

  • Tampering with gates, fences or security systems.

  • Unknown people asking unusual questions about residents.

  • Suspicious activity around livestock.

  • Theft of farm equipment or infrastructure.

  • Criminal activity reported in surrounding areas.

Suspicious activity should be reported to the appropriate authorities. Do not confront potentially dangerous suspects unnecessarily. Farm attacks are not something we should ignore.

South Africans deserve:

  • Accurate statistics.

  • Thorough investigation.

  • Effective policing.

  • Successful prosecution.

  • Support for victims.

  • Protection for rural communities.

We must stop arguing about politics

and start asking what can actually be done to protect people.

KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING.

REPORT CRIME.

PROTECT YOUR COMMUNITY.

DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY.

South Africa belongs to all its people —

and every person deserves to be safe.
