PROJECT: FAKE LOAN SCAMS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

PLEASE SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

In today's digital world, criminals exploit social media platforms like Facebook to scam unsuspecting individuals looking for financial relief. These scams are well-orchestrated – and appear to be legitimate loan offers from seemingly professional companies. They are nothing more than elaborate schemes designed to steal your money and personal information.

HOW THE SCAM WORKS:

  • It begins when a person in financial distress searches online for a loan.

  • They come across an attractive offer – easy approval, no credit checks, and fast payouts.

  • Desperate for help, they contact the "company," only to be asked for personal information such as:

    • Copies of their ID book or passport.

    • Payslips and proof of income.

    • Banking details.

    • Residential address.

WOULD YOU HAND THIS INFORMATION TO A CRIMINAL WILLINGLY?

  • When you send these documents to an unknown person online, you give them everything they need to commit identity fraud.

  • They now know:

    • Who you are.

    • Where you stay.

    • How much you earn.

    • Your bank account details.

    • And they have a copy of your ID.

THE NEXT PHASE – PAYMENTS & EMPTY PROMISES:

  • Once the scammer has your details, the real financial exploitation begins:  you are asked to pay various "fees" before your loan can be processed.

  • These may include:

    • Activation fees.

    • Processing fees.

    • Stamp duties.

    • Insurance fees.

    • Late payment penalties.

  • The scammers keep promising that after all fees have been paid - an even bigger loan amount will be refunded.

  • They dangle the "carrot," making it seem like a small price to pay for a larger reward.

REAL CASE STUDIES:

CASE 1:

  • A farmer, desperate for financial assistance, wanted to borrow R50,000.00 to build a trough for his cattle.

  • By the time he realised he was scammed, he had paid over R1.2 million in fake fees over several months - without ever receiving a cent of the promised loan!

CASE 2:

  • Another client experienced a similar setback when she initially applied for a loan from SLI Capital for R1,000,000.00.

  • SLI requested administrative fees, life insurance, and other payments, claiming the funds came from overseas.

  • She ended up paying approximately R360,000.00 for various invoices they sent her.

  • She then reduced her loan application amount to R400,000.00.

  • This client eventually decided to cancel the application and requested a refund of her money, but they refused and demanded an additional R65,000.00 before they would release any funds!

HOW TO IDENTIFY & AVOID FAKE LOAN SCAMS:

  • No registered financial institution will ask for upfront fees before granting a loan.

  • Check if the lender is registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR).

  • Scammers often use free email accounts like Gmail or Yahoo instead of official business emails.

  • Be cautious of lenders who communicate only via WhatsApp, SMS, or Facebook.

  • A professional loan provider will never pressure you to make immediate payments.

  • Always verify bank details before making deposits.

  • Keep records of all communications and transactions.
