Brutal Cattle Slaughter Highlights Government Neglect
As if it were not enough that cattle are being stolen from farmers nationwide, border farmers are now struggling along the Lesotho border with cattle from Lesotho illegally grazing in South Africa.
Between December 2024 and May 2025, this issue escalated dramatically. On 23 May 2025, 13 cows and 5 calves were brutally slaughtered — shot, hacked, and carved up with spears, pangas, and knives in a single coordinated attack.
An estimated loss of R400,000. The gruesome sight occurred on a rented farm in the Wepener area of the Free State.
Border farms on the South African side are battling not only livestock theft from Lesotho, but also Lesotho citizens illegally crossing into South Africa to graze their cattle. This falls squarely under the responsibility of the
South African National Defence Force (SANDF), whose duty it is to ensure that foreign nationals
do not cross the border illegally for grazing.
The SANDF has the legal mandate to impound livestock from Lesotho found illegally in South Africa, which was also the case here. However, in a disturbing act of retaliation, the owners of the impounded cattle reportedly came back and took revenge by brutally slaughtering an innocent farmer’s cattle in Wepener on 23 May 2025.
The Wepener Livestock Theft Unit, under the leadership of Captain Henning, is currently investigating the case.
The question must therefore be asked:
How seriously does the SANDF take its role in protecting South African farmers along the Lesotho border? This also refers to protection from farm attacks, stock theft, grain theft, and the theft of motor vehicles and farm equipment, such as tractors.
It is clear that the South African government has neglected the safety of our border farmers.
