RECOGNISING THE WARNING SIGNS MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE

Most organised crimes are preceded by observable indicators.

Unfortunately, many victims only recognise these warning signs after the crime has occurred.

Awareness and early reporting can interrupt criminal planning.

WARNING SIGN 1:

  • Repeated sightings of the same unfamiliar vehicle near your home, workplace or children's school.

WARNING SIGN 2:

  • Unknown individuals asking detailed questions about your finances, work schedule, security measures or family.

WARNING SIGN 3:

  • Unexpected social media requests from people you do not know, especially those seeking personal information.

WARNING SIGN 4:

  • Frequent scam calls designed to verify your identity, address or banking details.

WARNING SIGN 5:

  • Evidence that someone has attempted to access your online accounts or perform a SIM swap.

WARNING SIGN 6:

  • Unexplained tampering with gates, alarm systems, CCTV cameras or perimeter fencing.

WARNING SIGN 7:

  • Employees or contractors requesting information unrelated to their duties.

WARNING SIGN 8:

  • Neighbours reporting suspicious vehicles or unfamiliar people repeatedly observing your property.

WARNING SIGN 9:

  • Packages, deliveries or service appointments that you never requested.

WARNING SIGN 10:

  • Criminals often test their victims first by making nuisance calls, sending phishing messages or attempting minor fraud before escalating to more serious offences.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

If several warning signs occur together:

  • Take them seriously.

  • Inform your family immediately.

  • Review your security measures.

  • Change routines.

  • Strengthen online security.

  • Notify your security provider.

  • Report suspicious activity to the SAPS.

  • Preserve evidence such as CCTV footage, registration numbers and screenshots.

Criminals rely on victims ignoring the early warning signs.

The more difficult you make it for criminals to gather intelligence, the more likely they are to abandon their plans and move on.

If you suspect organised criminal activity, surveillance or targeted intimidation,

consult Mr. Mike Bolhuis and the Specialist Investigators of Specialised Security Services (SSS).

Recognising the signs early can be the difference between preventing a crime and becoming its next victim.
