WHEN TO OPEN A MISSING PERSON'S CASE:
In South Africa, there is no waiting period to report a person missing.
The moment you realise that someone’s whereabouts are unknown and you have reason to be concerned for their safety, you should open a missing person’s case at your nearest South African Police Service (SAPS) station.
This applies to both adults and children.
According to SAPS guidelines, immediate reporting is crucial because the first 24 to 48 hours are the most critical in tracing the individual and preventing potential harm.
You should open a case when:
The person’s disappearance is out of character or unusual for them.
The individual is vulnerable, such as a child, elderly person, or someone with a medical or mental condition.
There are suspicious circumstances, such as signs of foul play, threats, or a history of abuse.
The missing person has been involved in dangerous situations, like going out alone at night or travelling through unsafe areas.
When reporting, take along recent photographs of the missing person, provide details such as clothing worn, physical description, last known location, and information about friends or places they frequently visit.
The SAPS will open an official case file and circulate the person’s details through their Missing Persons Bureau, as well as to other law enforcement and relevant organisations.
Delaying the report can reduce the chances of finding the individual safe, especially in cases involving children, kidnapping, or human trafficking.
Acting immediately and providing accurate information gives investigators the best possible chance of resolving the case quickly.
