Mr Mike Bolhuis is a dedicated wildlife advocate renowned for his passionate work with flamingos.

His commitment to protecting and conserving these magnificent birds is evident through his extensive research,

habitat preservation efforts, and public awareness campaigns.

Mr Bolhuis has played a pivotal role in safeguarding flamingo populations from environmental threats and human encroachment, working tirelessly to promote their well-being and the health of their ecosystems.

His expertise and dedication make him a leading voice in wildlife conservation, particularly for flamingos.

In the past year, sightings of flamingos in South Africa have been quite notable, reflecting the migratory patterns

and the seasonal variations of these iconic birds.

FLAMINGO SIGHTINGS IN THE PAST YEAR:

  • West Coast National Park:

    • Date: Various sightings throughout the year

    • Details: This park, located near Cape Town, is known for its significant flamingo populations, particularly in the lagoon areas. Reports indicate substantial flocks were observed during the wet season, with numbers peaking around winter (June-August).

  • Karoo National Park:

    • Date: Multiple sightings from November 2023 to March 2024

    • Details: Flamingos were spotted in the park's ephemeral wetlands, benefiting from seasonal rains. The park's temporary pans provide crucial feeding grounds for both Lesser and Greater Flamingos.

  • St. Lucia Estuary (iSimangaliso Wetland Park):

    • Date: Consistent sightings reported throughout the year

    • Details: The estuary and surrounding wetlands have hosted large numbers of flamingos, especially during the summer months (December-February), when the water levels are higher and food is more abundant.

  • Pretoria Botanical Gardens:

    • Date: Notable sightings in April and May 2024

    • Details: Lesser flamingos were observed in the garden's water features during their migration, and several birdwatching groups noted their presence.

  • De Mond Nature Reserve:

    • Date: Sightings from September 2023 to February 2024

    • Details: Located along the Overberg coast, this reserve reported several sightings of flamingos in its estuarine areas. The presence of flamingos was particularly notable during the late spring and summer.

Our own WhatsApp group of wildlife supporters have had many other sightings and they post regularly on:

As many members of the public would recall, Mr Mike Bolhuis' journey with the Flamingos started at Kampfers Dam,

located near Springbok in the Northern Cape, in 2019.

Kamfers Dam is ideal for flamingos due to its ephemeral wetland nature,

which provides shallow feeding areas rich in nutrients.

Its role as a breeding and nesting ground, combined with its importance as a migratory stopover site,

makes it a key habitat for flamingos in South Africa.

Ongoing conservation efforts help to maintain the dam's ecological health,

ensuring that it continues to support these iconic birds.

IDEAL HABITAT OF KAMFERSDAM:

  • Ephemeral Wetlands:

    • Seasonal Flooding: Kamfers Dam is an ephemeral wetland, meaning its water levels fluctuate seasonally. During wetter periods, the dam expands and provides extensive shallow water areas that are crucial for flamingos. These shallow areas are ideal for feeding, as flamingos use their specialized bills to filter-feed on small organisms.

  • High Nutrient Content:

    • Food Resources: The dam's water often has high concentrations of algae, brine flies, and other invertebrates, which are key food sources for flamingos. The availability of these nutrients supports large flocks of flamingos, which can sustain themselves while in the area.

BREEDING AND NESTING GROUNDS:

  • Breeding Site:

    • Nesting Opportunities: Flamingos often seek out specific conditions for nesting, including stable water levels and minimal disturbance. Kamfers Dam has been known to provide suitable conditions for breeding, although breeding success can be variable depending on environmental conditions.

  • Protection from Predators:

    • Safe Nesting: The dam's extensive shallow waters can provide a degree of protection from land-based predators. Flamingos build their nests on mudflats or small islands that are less accessible to predators, which helps in protecting their eggs and chicks.

MIGRATORY PATTERNS:

  • Stopover Site:

    • Migratory Resting Point: Kamfers Dam is strategically located along migratory routes for flamingos. It serves as a crucial stopover point where flamingos can rest and feed during their long migrations between breeding and feeding grounds.

  • Seasonal Attraction:

    • Optimal Conditions: During migratory periods, the dam's water levels and food availability are particularly attractive to flamingos. The dam's seasonal variation can align with the timing of flamingo migrations, making it an important habitat at certain times of the year.

CONSERVATION EFFORTS:

  • Protected Area Status:

    • Conservation Initiatives: Kamfers Dam has been the focus of various conservation efforts aimed at preserving its ecological value. These efforts include monitoring water quality, managing invasive species, and protecting the dam from overuse and pollution.

  • Community Involvement:

    • Local Engagement: Conservation initiatives often involve local communities and stakeholders, which helps in ensuring that the dam remains a viable habitat for flamingos and other wildlife.

Although the Flamingo numbers have dwindled in the past few months at

Kamfers Dam, due to low water levels and dilapidated dam infrastructure,

Mr Bolhuis is still invested in their safekeeping.
