To all the supporters, donors and friends of the Mike Bolhuis Flamingo Project.

Over many years, the Mike Bolhuis Flamingo Project has grown into one of South Africa's

most recognised private conservation initiatives.

This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support,

trust and commitment of countless individuals who have contributed to the project and its vision.

After careful consideration and extensive discussions regarding the long-term future of the flamingo colony and

the Non-Profit Company (NPC) established to support it, Mr. Mike Bolhuis has decided to transfer the future management

and governance of the Mike Bolhuis Flamingo Project NPC to the Zaagkuilsdrift Conservation Foundation.

This decision has been made with a single objective:

To secure the long-term future of the flamingos and the conservation goals for which the NPC was established.

The Zaagkuilsdrift Conservation Foundation is led by Mr. Alexander Howard Hattingh, owner of Zaagkuilsdrift Bird Sanctuary, Chairman of the Wildfowl and Gamebird Association of Africa, African Director of the Numididae Conservation Project,

and a recognised conservation breeder actively involved in numerous national and international conservation initiatives.

Zaagkuilsdrift Bird Sanctuary has established itself as one of South Africa's leading birding and conservation destinations.

The Foundation possesses the facilities, infrastructure, expertise and long-term vision necessary to ensure the continued growth, sustainability and success of the Flamingo Project.

Mr. Bolhuis has expressed his confidence that the flamingos, the NPC and its conservation objectives

are being entrusted to responsible, experienced and capable custodians.

It is important to note that this transition relates exclusively to the Mike Bolhuis Flamingo Project NPC

and its associated conservation activities.

Mr. Bolhuis's broader animal welfare initiatives, investigations, rescue operations and all other ongoing projects

remain entirely separate and will continue independently under his direct leadership and oversight.

Mr. Bolhuis extends his sincere appreciation to every donor, supporter, volunteer and member of the public

who has supported the Flamingo Project over the years. Their contributions have helped build a conservation initiative

of lasting significance, and it is his firm belief that this new chapter will enable the project to continue expanding

and making a meaningful contribution to conservation in South Africa.

Supporters are encouraged to continue supporting both the Flamingo Project and

the Zaagkuilsdrift Conservation Foundation as they carry this important work into the future.

Mr. Bolhuis thanks everyone for their continued trust, confidence and support.

OMVATTENDE GESPREK:

THE MIKE BOLHUIS FLAMINGO PROJECT

STATEMENT FROM THE ZAAGKUILSDRIFT CONSERVATION FOUNDATION

The Zaagkuilsdrift Conservation Foundation has expressed its appreciation for being entrusted

with the future of the Mike Bolhuis Flamingo Project.

The Foundation remains fully committed to preserving the legacy established over many years while creating

new opportunities for growth through conservation, education, scientific research and responsible environmental stewardship.

The flamingos will continue to serve as the Foundation's flagship conservation project and will remain ambassadors

for wetland conservation, biodiversity protection and environmental awareness throughout South Africa.

The Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to Mr. Mike Bolhuis for the confidence he has placed in its leadership

and looks forward to building upon the exceptional conservation foundation that has already been established.

Mr. Alexander Howard Hattingh

Founder & Executive Director: Zaagkuilsdrift Conservation Foundation

On 14 July 2026, the transition of the Mike Bolhuis Flamingo Project became a reality when 229 flamingos

were carefully and successfully relocated from Leeuwfontein, Pretoria, to their new permanent home at

the Zaagkuilsdrift Conservation Foundation near Bela-Bela.

The relocation was conducted in four carefully planned loads using specially designed transport crates to ensure the safety

and well-being of every bird. The journey covered approximately 86 kilometres.

The operation was meticulously coordinated to minimise stress on the flamingos

while ensuring their safe arrival at their new conservation sanctuary.

This successful relocation marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Mike Bolhuis Flamingo Project,

securing the long-term future of the flock under the stewardship of the Zaagkuilsdrift Conservation Foundation,

where the flamingos will continue to play an important role in conservation, education and environmental awareness.

TEMPORARY QUARANTINE AND ACCLIMATISATION FACILITY AT ZAAGKUILSDRIFT CONSERVATION FOUNDATION:

  • Upon their arrival at the Zaagkuilsdrift Conservation Foundation, the 229 flamingos were introduced into a specially prepared temporary quarantine and acclimatisation area.

  • This controlled environment was designed to allow the birds to recover from the relocation, adapt gradually to their new surroundings, and minimise any unnecessary stress associated with the move.

  • The quarantine facility includes a carefully managed pond, where water quality, feeding, health monitoring and environmental conditions can be closely supervised.

  • This temporary enclosure enables conservation staff to observe the flamingos' behaviour, ensure that every bird is feeding and adapting normally, and provide immediate veterinary attention should it become necessary.

  • As part of the relocation and conservation programme, each flamingo was also microchipped for permanent identification, and the required blood samples were collected for comprehensive health screening.

  • These important veterinary procedures help ensure the long-term welfare of the flock by establishing baseline health records, screening for disease, and enabling individual identification and monitoring throughout the birds' lives.

  • Once the flock has fully acclimatised and all health assessments have been completed, the flamingos will be released into their permanent wetland habitat at the Zaagkuilsdrift Conservation Foundation, where they will continue to thrive as ambassadors for wetland conservation, biodiversity and environmental education.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE:

The relocation of the flamingos was conducted in full compliance with all applicable South African legislation

governing wildlife conservation, animal transport and animal welfare. All required permits, authorisations

and veterinary documentation were obtained before the relocation, and every aspect of the operation

was carried out in accordance with the rules, regulations and conditions prescribed by the relevant South African authorities. The welfare, health and safety of the flamingos remained the highest priority throughout the entire relocation process.

NEW NPC GOVERNANCE:

The official Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) documentation has been received,

confirming the appointment of the new Board of Directors of Specialized Security Services Projects NPC.

The newly appointed directors are  Mr. Alexander Howard Hattingh, Mrs. Farrah Megan Hattingh, Mr. Matthew Scott Schoebel and Mrs. Angela Kay Schoebel. This formal appointment marks the completion of the governance transition and provides a strong foundation for the continued management and advancement of the organisation's conservation objectives.
