Although Specialised Security Services investigates police discrepancies, we acknowledge and commend those police officials who serve the South African public with integrity and commitment. SSS works closely with many SAPS officials in an endeavour to protect the public, apprehend criminals, and successfully prosecute them.
Recent achievements in apprehending organised criminal syndicates and gang members highlight the
South African Police Service’s (SAPS) dedication to combating serious and violent crimes.
According to SAPS National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, who addressed the media on Thursday,
1 August 2024, the police are firmly responding to the threats posed by criminals. He emphasised the SAPS’s aggressive stance in asserting state authority and ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens.
“Our high-density operations, led by Provincial Commissioners across all provinces, have resulted in the arrest of 766,237 suspects for various offences,” Masemola stated.
This figure includes 161,752 wanted individuals connected to serious crimes such as murder, cash-in-transit robberies, sexual offences, rape, car hijacking, and firearm-related crimes.
He highlighted the enhancement of cash-in-transit task teams, particularly in the Eastern Cape, where 13 robbers were apprehended last month, and six suspects were fatally wounded during police confrontations.
The SAPS also achieved a breakthrough by arresting ten individuals linked to ATM bombings in Gauteng.
Eight suspects were apprehended in Katlehong, Thokoza, and Soweto, while two were traced to Senekal in the Free State.
These arrests, made with support from banking sector partners, are connected to over 20 ATM bombings in Soweto and the East Rand.
Additionally, a significant bust occurred when Gauteng police intercepted 44 suspects at a Kempton Park liquor warehouse, where they were caught loading R15 million worth of alcohol into trucks.
The suspects have been charged with business robbery.
DRUG SEIZURES:
In recent weeks, a clandestine drug lab in Limpopo, valued at R2 billion, was dismantled, with two Mexican nationals among the five suspects arrested.
In the Western Cape, R252 million worth of cocaine was seized at a roadblock in Stillbaai, with a Russian national among the two suspects.
Additionally, R40 million worth of dagga was confiscated in Magaliesburg, Gauteng.
Mpumalanga also saw major drug busts between May and June, with R4 million each in dagga, cocaine, and crystal meth seized.
Over the past year, Operation Shanela has led to the destruction of drugs worth R2 billion, including cocaine, crystal meth, and unregistered medicines.
In total, 21,161 individuals were arrested for drug dealing and 64,351 for drug possession.
GANG VIOLENCE AND FIREARMS:
Ongoing gang-related violence in the Eastern and Western Cape, as well as Gauteng, remains a priority.
The deployment of the Anti-Gang Unit and specialised teams has led to the arrest of numerous gang members, including 64 in Westbury, with 34 from the Fast gang.
In the past six months, 36 gang members from various provinces have received a cumulative 350 years in prison.
In the week of 1 August 2024, 106 firearms were seized nationwide, 40 of which came from KwaZulu-Natal.
The seized firearms include 90 handguns, eight homemade guns, seven rifles, and one shotgun.
Over the past two years, more than 20,000 firearms have been confiscated across South Africa, 3,100 of which came from the Western Cape and 673 from Gauteng.
STOLEN VEHICLES:
During the last few months, several stolen vehicles were confiscated and recovered in roadblocks and cross-border operations.
KIDNAPPINGS:
During the last few months, several kidnappers were apprehended and arrested in several Provinces.
Currently, it is one of the most frequent and violent crimes in South Africa.
This comprehensive approach underscores SAPS’s ongoing commitment to tackling crime
and enhancing public safety nationwide.
