PROJECT: SSS WARNING - WOMEN URGED TO TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS FOLLOWING MULTIPLE FEMALE DEATHS IN KEMPTON PARK AREA

The discovery of multiple female bodies in and around Kempton Park, particularly in the Rhodesfield area,
has understandably caused serious concern among women and their families.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths and have established a multidisciplinary investigative team, including specialised detectives and investigative psychology resources.
Police have also stressed that it would be premature to conclude that the cases are connected or that one person is responsible.
However, women should not wait for investigators to establish whether there is a connection before taking sensible precautions.
WOMEN SHOULD CHANGE THEIR ROUTINES WHERE NECESSARY:
For the immediate future, women in Kempton Park, Rhodesfield and surrounding areas should exercise particular caution when walking, running or travelling alone.
SAPS has specifically advised women not to walk or exercise alone in isolated areas, to avoid secluded locations and, where possible, to travel or exercise in groups.
Women should:
Avoid running or walking alone in isolated areas, particularly early in the morning, after dark or when there are few people around.
Choose populated routes with good visibility rather than shortcuts through open fields, vacant land, bushy areas or secluded pathways.
Tell a family member or trusted person where they are going and when they expect to return.
Use live-location sharing when travelling alone.
Keep a charged cellphone with you and ensure emergency contacts are easily accessible.
Remain alert to their surroundings rather than walking or running while completely distracted by a cellphone, headphones or other devices.
If something feels wrong, leave the area immediately. Do not ignore an instinctive warning simply because there appears to be no obvious threat.
Avoid accepting lifts from strangers or allowing unfamiliar people to follow them home.
Check the vehicle and driver details when using e-hailing services and share the trip information with someone they trust.
Do not publicly advertise predictable routines, such as posting the exact time and route of a daily run.
Be particularly cautious when meeting someone known only through social media or online communication.
Police have specifically warned the public about meeting people they have only interacted with online.
DO NOT ASSUME A FAMILIAR AREA IS SAFE:
One of the greatest mistakes people make is believing that a familiar neighbourhood automatically means a safe environment.
A person who walks or runs the same route every day can become predictable.
Criminals can observe routines, identify isolated sections of a route and determine when someone is regularly alone.
Women should therefore vary routes and times where practical and avoid creating predictable patterns.
IF YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE BEING FOLLOWED:
Do not go directly home.
Move towards a busy shop, petrol station, security-controlled entrance, police station or other populated location.
Call someone you trust and, if necessary, contact the police.
If driving, keep the doors locked and windows closed. If you believe another vehicle is following you, do not stop at your home.
Drive to a police station, security complex or other busy location and attract attention.
FAMILIES ALSO HAVE A ROLE:
Families should take missing-person reports seriously and act immediately when a woman fails to return as expected.
Do not wait 24 hours before reporting a person missing. Preserve relevant information such as recent photographs, cellphone numbers, clothing descriptions, vehicle details, last known location, communication records and known movements.
This information can become critically important during the early stages of an investigation.
SSS WARNING:
The present circumstances in Kempton Park are being investigated by law enforcement,
and it is important that the public does not spread unverified information,
identify individuals without evidence or prematurely label the cases as the work of a serial killer.
At the same time, women do not need confirmation of a serial killer before taking additional precautions.
The safest approach is to assume that isolated environments can create opportunities for violent crime
and to reduce those opportunities wherever possible.
Women should remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary exposure to isolated areas,
use the buddy system where practical and ensure that trusted people know their movements.
Anyone with information that may assist investigators should report it to SAPS.
Information relating to the Kempton Park cases can also be provided to the investigating authorities
through the channels publicised by SAPS.
