Homeowners are strongly advised to vet anyone they allow to work on their property carefully.
Whether you are considering renovations or simply hiring contract workers, it is crucial to conduct thorough
research on any individual - whether they are cleaners, construction workers, builders, or other service providers -
before granting them access to your home.
The people you employ to work in your home or on your property are critical to your security.
Ensuring they are trustworthy is essential to protect your property, especially when you are away.
Although conducting background checks may seem time-consuming, it is a vital step that can significantly
enhance your home's security. In many cases of break-ins and robberies, criminals have exploited
insider information provided by workers with access to the property.
RECOMMENDED SAFETY MEASURES:
Criminal record check:
Conduct a criminal record check through the South African Police Service (SAPS) with the prospective employee's consent.
Reference checks:
Contact previous employers to verify their work history and ask critical questions regarding past security issues, reasons for dismissal, job responsibilities, and general conduct.
These insights can provide a clear picture of the individual's reliability.
Security system training:
If a security system is installed, ensure your workers understand how to use it correctly in your absence.
Teach them how to activate the alarm, respond to security company calls, and handle situations when security personnel arrive.
Access control:
Establish strict rules about who can enter your property.
Workers should never grant access to anyone without your express permission.
Provide clear guidelines on how to deal with visitors, including:
Asking the visitor to identify themselves by full name.
Requesting the purpose of their visit.
Checking identification, such as a company ID, national ID, or driver's license.
Verifying the visit by contacting you or the visitor's employer.
Community crime-prevention engagement:
Enrol long-term employees in local crime-prevention forums often organised by SAPS or community groups.
These forums provide valuable crime prevention and safety training, enhancing your property's security.
Verify identity documents thoroughly:
Cross-check identification documents for authenticity.
Be aware of common signs of fake IDs or licenses and verify them through relevant authorities if needed.
Employment contracts and terms of work:
Have an explicit employment contract outlining the work terms, responsibilities, code of conduct, and security protocols.
This document provides legal protection and sets expectations for both parties.
Limit access to sensitive areas:
Restrict access to sensitive areas of your home, such as bedrooms, offices, or rooms where valuables are kept.
Use locks or access codes to secure these areas and ensure only trusted individuals have access.
Monitor behaviour and performance regularly:
Keep an eye on the behaviour and performance of workers, especially new hires.
Unusual behaviour, such as frequent phone calls or visits from unknown people, can be red flags that warrant further scrutiny.
Secure valuables and personal information:
Keep valuables such as jewellery, cash, and important documents in a secure, locked area.
Avoid leaving sensitive personal information like bank statements, passwords, or ID copies within easy reach.
Install surveillance cameras:
Consider installing surveillance cameras around your property.
Visible cameras can deter potential misconduct, while footage can serve as valuable evidence if an incident occurs.
Clear communication about safety protocols:
Ensure workers understand and follow safety and security protocols, such as keeping doors locked, not allowing unknown visitors inside, and reporting suspicious activities immediately.
Use reputable contractors and services:
When hiring through a company, choose reputable service providers who conduct their vetting processes.
Ask the company about their employee background check procedures to ensure they meet your security needs.
Keep a record of all workers:
Maintain a log of all workers who have been employed at your property, including names, ID numbers, contact details, and the dates they worked.
This information can be helpful for reference or if security issues arise in the future.
Ensure workers are aware of security measures:
Inform workers about security measures in place, such as alarms and surveillance, and explain that these measures are for your safety and theirs.
Emergency contacts and protocols:
Provide workers with emergency contacts and instruct them on what to do in case of an emergency, such as contacting the police, security company, or a designated homeowner.
