A mobile device, such as a smartphone or smartwatch, is your most valuable asset in an emergency.
It allows you to request assistance quickly, and to receive help more efficiently from the relevant authorities.
THE USE OF MOBILE PHONES IN EMERGENCIES:
Smartphones contain a large amount of data that can be used in an emergency.
They can assist in locating you, requesting help through a call or WhatsApp, and providing ICE (In Case of Emergency) contacts and information.
It is crucial to ensure that your smart devices are configured correctly for emergencies.
SETTING UP YOUR SMART DEVICE:
Keep your mobile phone and smartwatch charged at all times.
Set up emergency smartphone features and learn how they work.
Usually, you can activate an emergency request by pressing the power button for a certain duration.
This request will be sent to your emergency contacts along with your location and ICE details.
Always keep your smartwatch connected to your phone.
In an emergency where you cannot call for help, press the emergency button on your smartwatch.
For example, a Garmin watch will send a message to your emergency contacts containing your live location, current heart rate, oxygen saturation levels, and ICE details.
THE IMPORTANCE OF ICE CONTACTS:
If you become a victim of a crime, it is crucial that your ICE contacts know who to contact.
Your ICE contacts could contact Mr Mike Bolhuis immediately with all the details they have received.
Our task team is able to quickly deploy services from Cyber to third-party medical assistance.
STEPS TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE COVERED:
Keep Devices Charged:
Always have your smartphone and smartwatch charged above 50%.
Maintain Connection:
Ensure a stable connection between your watch and your phone.
Multiple Phones:
If you have more than one phone (e.g., for work), keep one in your pocket while driving and the other in a safe place in your car.
This way, if a device or your vehicle is stolen, you still have one phone to call for help and another for tracking and tracing.
Traceability:
If you have an iPhone, ensure it is traceable even when switched off.
Share Login Details:
Provide at least two trusted individuals with your login details and communicate these steps, especially if they are one of your ICE contacts.
Regular Check-ins:
Check-in with your partner, spouse, or child periodically, especially when they are on the road at night.
Family Tracking Apps:
Install a family tracking app like Find My iPhone or Life360.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that you and your
loved ones are better prepared and protected in case of an emergency.
