This document serves as a formal success report regarding the arrest and criminal prosecution

of Mr. Michael Johan von Backström.

Following a dedicated investigation by Specialised Security Services (SSS)

in collaboration with the SPCA, the suspect has been successfully charged for violent acts of animal cruelty.

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

  • On 26 March 2026, Mr. Michael Johan von Backström used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot and kill multiple feral and domestic cats at a lodge property in Silver Lakes, Pretoria.

  • Eyewitness Mrs. Juanita Cronje reported that the suspect pointed the firearm at her, threatening to shoot her if she did not get out of his way, before killing a cat in her presence.

  • The incident occurred in a built-up residential area where the discharge of a firearm endangered neighbours and employees.

MEDIA ATTENTION AND PUBLIC OUTCRY:

The incident triggered a massive social media outcry and significant media coverage across South Africa.

  • VIRAL ATTENTION:

    • Reports of the shooting "quickly gained traction" on platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

  • PUBLIC MOVEMENTS:

    • A movement titled "Justice for Pretoria Cats" was formed, leading to protests near the Garsfontein SAPS station.

    • A petition was signed by 4,028 concerned members of the public.

  • NEWS COVERAGE:

    • Major publications, including The Citizen and Rekord, provided extensive coverage of the investigation and the public fury surrounding it.

  • IMPACT ON BUSINESSES:

    • The suspect, Mr. Michael Johan von Backström, publicly noted that his businesses, including Foundry Guest Lodge, suffered significant cancellations and negative reviews because of the public backlash.

SSS INTERVENTION AND LEGAL PROGRESSION:

  • The initial police investigation under Boschkop CAS 207/3/2026 was unfortunately withdrawn (nolle prosequi), and no charges were laid at that time.

  • Recognising the gravity of the offences, SSS operatives intervened and followed up directly with the SPCA to ensure the matter was not dropped.

  • Following this intervention and a review of the evidence, the SPCA opened a separate, dedicated animal cruelty case: Boschkop CAS 11/6/2026.

THE LAW REGARDING ANIMAL CRUELTY:

  • In South Africa, animals are protected under the Animals Protection Act No. 71 of 1962 (APA).

  • This legislation criminalises the ill-treatment, neglect, or unnecessary killing of animals.

    • SUFFERING EQUALS CRUELTY:

      • Legally, whenever an animal is subjected to conditions or actions that cause it to suffer, it is considered cruelty.

    • CONSEQUENCES:

      • Any person found guilty of such offences faces penalties including fines, imprisonment for up to 12 months, and being declared unfit to own animals.

HOW AND WHERE TO REPORT ANIMAL CRUELTY:

It is vital for the public to report animal abuse to ensure that justice is served:

  1. Contact the SPCA by Telephone:

    • All SPCAs are legally required to provide a 24-hour emergency telephone service.

    • Reporting via telephone is critical for urgent interventions.

  2. Why the SPCA?

    • While many organisations assist animals, cruelty must be reported to the SPCA or the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) because South African law vests these organisations with enforcement powers, specifically the power of entry and seizure.

  3. Avoid Social Media-Only Reporting:

    • Do not rely on reporting cases via social media, websites, or email, as these are not monitored 24/7 and delays can lead to further animal suffering.

  4. Official NSPCA Contacts:

CRIMINAL STATUS:

  • ARREST DATE: 31 July 2026.
