The death of Mr. Joseph “Big Joe” Nyalungu has drawn major attention in South Africa
because he was widely regarded as one of the country’s most notorious alleged rhino poaching kingpins,
with links to organised crime networks operating around the Kruger National Park region.
WHO WAS "BIG JOE"?
Mr. Joseph “Big Joe” Nyalungu was a former police officer from Mpumalanga whose name became associated for more than a decade with:
Rhino poaching syndicates.
Illegal rhino horn trafficking.
Money laundering.
Explosives and firearms cases.
Organised criminal networks in the Lowveld region.
THE MAIN POLICE CASES AGAINST "BIG JOE":
1. RHINO POACHING AND RACKETEERING:
Mr. Nyalungu was repeatedly accused of being a central figure in large-scale rhino poaching operations linked to the Kruger National Park region.
Authorities alleged he coordinated:
Rhino hunting operations.
Rhino horn trafficking.
Smuggling networks.
Organised syndicate activities.
He faced charges including:
Illegal rhino hunting.
Possession of rhino horn.
Racketeering.
Organised crime offences.
2. MONEY LAUNDERING AND PROCEEDS OF CRIME:
Police and the NPA alleged that millions of rand found in his possession were proceeds from rhino poaching activities.
In 2013:
The Asset Forfeiture Unit seized over R5.8 million linked to him.
Later, about R8.1 million and luxury vehicles were forfeited to the state.
The NPA identified him as an alleged syndicate leader involved in large-scale poaching and horn trafficking operations.
3. FIREARMS, EXPLOSIVES AND AMMUNITION CASES:
In October 2024, Hawks members and specialised police units raided his workshop in Mkhuhlu and discovered:
Dynamite.
Detonators.
Ammunition.
Explosive cords.
Police said some of the explosives were commonly associated with ATM bombings and cash-in-transit robberies.
He was arrested and later granted bail while the matter remained before the court at the time of his death.
4. MURDER AND CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS:
Over the years, reports also linked him to investigations involving:
Murder.
Corruption.
Theft.
Tax evasion.
However, not all these allegations resulted in convictions.
MULTIPLE ARRESTS OVER MANY YEARS:
He had been arrested numerous times since around 2008 or 2011, often being released on bail while cases continued through various courts in Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
Courts connected to his matters included:
Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court.
Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court.
Skukuza Regional Court.
Mbombela High Court.
Nelspruit Regional Court.
Napuno Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo.
WHY THE CASES WERE SIGNIFICANT:
His case became one of South Africa’s best-known examples of:
Organised environmental crime,
Alleged corruption involving former law enforcement figures,
And the overlap between wildlife trafficking and violent criminal syndicates.
Because he was a former police officer himself, the allegations also intensified concerns about criminal infiltration of law enforcement structures in parts of Mpumalanga.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Mr. Nyalungu was shot dead on 16 May 2026 at his business premises in Mkhuhlu, Mpumalanga.
Two-armed suspects arrived in a white bakkie.
They approached him while he was seated with others.
He attempted to flee.
The gunmen chased and shot him multiple times before escaping.
Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.
WHY THE KILLING IS SIGNIFICANT:
The assassination is important for several reasons:
1. IT POINTS TO POSSIBLE ORGANISED CRIME RETALIATION:
The killing happened just days after he survived another assassination attempt at the exact same location.
That has fuelled speculation that:
Rival syndicates,
Internal criminal disputes,
Financial conflicts,
Informants,
Or revenge-linked motives may have been involved.
2. IT HIGHLIGHTS THE VIOLENCE AROUND THE RHINO HORN TRADE:
Rhino poaching in South Africa is not only an environmental crime but it is tied to highly sophisticated transnational criminal economies involving:
Smuggling routes,
Corruption,
Weapons,
Cross-border syndicates,
And sometimes former law enforcement insiders.
3. HIS BACKGROUND RAISED LONGSTANDING CONCERNS ABOUT CORRUPTION:
Because Mr. Nyalungu was a former police officer, his case repeatedly raised fears about criminal infiltration of law enforcement structures.
Cases involving former or serving officers linked to organised crime often deepen public distrust in institutions.
4. HE DIED BEFORE MANY CRIMINAL MATTERS WERE FINALISED:
At the time of his death, several cases against him were reportedly still ongoing in Mpumalanga and Limpopo courts.
That means:
Some investigations may now become harder,
Potential witnesses may fear retaliation,
And prosecutors could lose a key figure connected to broader syndicates.
5. BROADER CONTEXT:
The Mkhuhlu/Hazyview area has, for years, been associated with violent organised crime linked to:
Rhino poaching,
Illegal firearms,
Taxi violence,
Extortion,
And contract killings.
Some reports even describe Mkhuhlu as the “land of blood” because of recurring gun murders in the area.
Mr. Nyalungu’s killing, therefore, is being viewed not as an isolated murder, but as part of a deeper criminal ecosystem operating in parts of Mpumalanga.
The death of Mr. Joseph “Big Joe” Nyalungu marks more than the end of one controversial figure’s life.
It exposes the deep and violent criminal networks that continue to thrive around South Africa’s illegal wildlife trade.
His long history of arrests, allegations and alleged links to organised syndicates highlighted how rhino poaching
has evolved into a sophisticated underworld driven by money, corruption, weapons and fear.
While his killing may close one chapter, it also raises difficult questions about how deeply entrenched these networks remain, how many others continue operating in the shadows, and whether law enforcement authorities can truly dismantle the criminal structures that have turned parts of Mpumalanga into battlegrounds for profit and power.
