SSS INVESTIGATION INTO THE KIDNAPPING OF MS. ALEX VAN HEERDEN
The father of Ms. Alex van Heerden approached Specialised Security Services (SSS)
and requested assistance with the investigation into the kidnapping of his daughter.
Ms. Alex van Heerden was kidnapped on 5 August 2026 at her residence in Northcliff, Johannesburg,
and was released approximately 24 hours later in Vosloorus.
The circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and her unusually rapid release raised questions
that required careful investigation. Following her release, allegations and speculation appeared in the media
questioning whether the kidnapping could have been arranged or whether Ms. Van Heerden herself
could have had any involvement.
SSS approached these allegations objectively.
The purpose of the investigation was not to accuse the victim,
but to establish the facts and systematically eliminate all possible avenues of involvement.
THE SSS INVESTIGATION:
As part of the investigation, it was suggested that Ms. Alex van Heerden voluntarily undergo a polygraph examination.
Ms. Van Heerden agreed to the examination and provided her full cooperation.
Prior to the examination, the SSS investigation team conducted an interview and profile assessment with her on 17 August 2026.
The investigation specifically considered the possibility of an arranged or staged kidnapping, including whether Ms. Van Heerden herself could have participated in planning or facilitating the incident.
The questions presented during the polygraph examination addressed, among other matters:
Whether Alex had any involvement in arranging her own kidnapping.
Whether she was truthful regarding the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping.
Whether her account of events following her release was truthful.
Whether she had deliberately withheld material information from the investigation.
POLYGRAPH RESULT:
The SSS team can confirm that NO DECEPTION was indicated in response to the relevant questions posed during the polygraph examination.
Ms. Van Heerden voluntarily submitted to the examination and cooperated fully with the investigative process.
Based on the information available to SSS, including the interview, profiling process and polygraph examination, SSS has eliminated Ms. Van Heerden as a suspect in her own kidnapping.
This finding must be understood within the proper investigative context.
A polygraph examination is an investigative aid and does not replace corroborating evidence, forensic investigation or the work of the South African Police Service.
The SSS conclusion is therefore based on the totality of the investigative information presently available.
WHY WAS MS. ALEX VAN HEERDEN KIDNAPPED?
Kidnappings are generally committed for a number of possible motives.
Three principal motives are:
1. MONEY:
One of the most common motives associated with kidnapping is financial gain.
Criminals may demand a ransom from the victim's family, employer or another party in exchange for the victim's release.
In the Van Heerden matter, no ransom demand was made, according to the information presently available to SSS.
2. INFORMATION:
A kidnapping can also be committed to obtain information from a victim.
The information sought may relate to finances, business activities, personal relationships, access to property, security arrangements, passwords, assets or other information known to the victim.
This investigative avenue, therefore, cannot be disregarded merely because no ransom was demanded.
3. REVENGE:
Kidnapping may also be motivated by revenge, retaliation or intimidation.
Investigators must therefore examine the victim's personal, professional and financial relationships and determine whether there are individuals who may have had a motive to harm, intimidate or abduct the victim.
THE UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES:
The circumstances surrounding this kidnapping remain unusual.
According to the information available to SSS, no ransom was demanded and Ms. Van Heerden was released approximately 24 hours after being abducted.
A relatively rapid release without an apparent ransom demand requires investigators to examine the circumstances carefully.
It does not, by itself, establish the motive for the kidnapping.
SSS is also investigating information indicating that Ms. Van Heerden had no known enemies or obvious individuals with a direct motive to abduct her.
This raises the possibility that the perpetrators may have been seeking information rather than money, although this remains an investigative hypothesis and cannot presently be stated as an established fact.
The fact that Ms. Van Heerden was reportedly treated humanely during the period of her captivity is another circumstance that requires examination.
Investigators must determine whether this behaviour provides any indication of the perpetrators' objective, their relationship to the victim, or the information they may have been seeking.
THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES:
The elimination of Ms. Van Heerden as a suspect does not bring the investigation to an end.
SSS will continue examining individuals and circumstances surrounding the victim, including persons who may have had access to information about her movements, residence, routine, relationships or personal circumstances.
This forms part of a standard elimination process, whereby investigators systematically identify possible suspects, establish their relationships to the victim and determine whether they had motive, opportunity, knowledge or access.
The investigation must also establish how the perpetrators obtained information about Ms. Van Heerden, why she was selected as the victim, why she was released after approximately 24 hours, and why no ransom was apparently demanded.
These questions are critical to understanding the kidnapping.
The kidnapping of Ms. Alex van Heerden remains a serious criminal investigation.
SSS was brought into the matter by Ms. Van Heerden's father to assist in establishing the facts
surrounding his daughter's kidnapping. Ms. Van Heerden has cooperated voluntarily with the SSS investigation
and submitted herself to a polygraph examination following concerns and allegations raised after her release.
The examination produced no indication of deception on the questions presented to her, and,
together with the investigative information presently available,
SSS has eliminated Ms. Alex van Heerden from involvement in her own kidnapping.
The focus must now remain on identifying the perpetrators, establishing their motive and determining
precisely how and why Alex became the target.
A kidnapping cannot be judged solely by the duration of captivity or the fact that a victim was released unharmed.
Every circumstance must be examined, corroborated and tested against the available evidence.
SSS will continue its investigation into the persons and circumstances surrounding Ms. Alex van Heerden,
with particular attention to the possible motive, the source of information available to the perpetrators,
and the individuals who may have had knowledge of the victim's movements and circumstances.
Anyone with information relevant to this kidnapping is urged to provide it to the investigating authorities or SSS.
All information received by SSS will be handled with the necessary confidentiality and investigative discretion.
