PROJECT: BAIL DENIED AGAIN FOR RUDI LUBBE IN THE JACQUES FREITAG MURDER INVESTIGATION

UPDATE:
The murder case involving the late Mr. Jacques Freitag, former world high jump champion, was again heard in Court 16 of the Pretoria Regional Court on 4 July 2025.
During the proceedings, the presiding magistrate once again denied bail to the accused Mr. Rudi Lubbe, citing his failure to present convincing evidence to justify his release.
Mr. Lubbe, who is currently representing himself, could not prove the exceptional circumstances required for bail to be granted.
The State maintains that it has a strong case against Mr. Lubbe and continues to oppose bail on grounds including the seriousness of the offence and the potential risk he poses to the investigation or possible witnesses.
The case has now been postponed to 26 August 2025 for a final decision on whether it will be transferred to the High Court for trial.
Both Mr. Rudi Lubbe and his co-accused remain in custody pending the outcome of this decision.
BACKGROUND: THE MURDER OF MR. JACQUES FREITAG
Mr. Jacques Freitag, a celebrated South African high jumper and former world champion, was found murdered in June 2023 in Pretoria.
His body was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds, and evidence at the scene indicated the murder was planned and executed with precision, ruling out all possibility of a random or opportunistic crime.
Following an intensive investigation, two suspects were arrested, including Mr. Rudi Lubbe, who has since faced repeated bail hearings without success.
Law enforcement agencies believe that the motive behind Mr. Freitag’s murder may be linked to personal disputes, financial tensions, or criminal undercurrents and is still under investigation.
CO-ACCUSED: MS. CHANTELLE OOSTHUIZEN
Ms. Chantelle Oosthuizen remains in custody awaiting trial on charges related to the murder of Mr. Jacques Freitag.
Along with her co-accused, Mr. Rudi Lubbe, she has been denied bail and is being held at the Pretoria Moot police holding cells, where the case continues to progress.
Both Mr. Lubbe and Ms. Oosthuizen were arrested on 16 July 2024 at a guesthouse in Sabie, Mpumalanga.
They face charges of murder (the killing of world-class high jumper Mr. Jacques Freitag) and conspiracy to commit murder (related to an earlier plot against Ms. Oosthuizen’s fiancé, Mr. Louis Harmse).
Bail applications have been repeatedly denied, with the State arguing the seriousness of the charges and potential risks if they were released.
ONGOING INVESTIGATION:
Authorities continue to pursue the matter with urgency and are working closely with forensic experts, digital analysts, and intelligence teams to ensure a thorough prosecution.
Investigators believe there may be additional individuals with knowledge or involvement in the crime who have not yet come forward.
The public is urged to report relevant information that may assist the SAPS in ensuring that justice is served for the late Mr. Jacques Freitag and his family.
