Farmer Hit Again in Gruesome Attack — Still no response from SANDF

Read the initial project:
Wepener, Free State – 12 June 2025:
A border farmer in the Wepener district continues to suffer devastating losses following a series of violent cross-border livestock attacks.
Between December 2024 and May 2025, the farmer has lost 20 cattle, 18 of which were brutally slaughtered on 23 May.
The violence escalated further on 10 June 2025, when two more cattle were killed in a similarly gruesome manner, allegedly by suspects crossing illegally from Lesotho.
Farming along the Caledon River for nearly a decade, the tenant farmer now describes his daily existence as "survival, not farming."
"We’re up against an enemy that crosses our border with impunity, and no one is stopping them," he said.
Despite multiple requests for intervention, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), mandated to secure national borders, has reportedly failed to do so.
In a desperate attempt to protect his remaining livestock, the farmer has relocated his herd further inland, away from the Lesotho border.
In terms of its legal mandate, the SANDF is authorised to impound livestock from Lesotho found grazing illegally on South African soil.
In May, after the farmer exercised this right, retaliation allegedly followed swiftly and violently: 13 cows and 5 calves were mutilated with pangas, spears, and knives, one of the worst livestock attacks in recent memory.
The latest killings suggest that the violence is ongoing and is intensifying.
Illegal grazing, cross-border theft, and unchecked brutality continue to plague the Free State border region.
Local farmers, increasingly disillusioned, say they feel abandoned by the very institutions responsible for their safety.
The Wepener Livestock Theft Unit, under the command of Captain Henning, is currently investigating the attacks.
Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward.
