PROJECT: CRIMES DURING MATRIC FINAL EXAMS

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

As the Grade 12 Final National Exams approach for students and parents in South Africa,

it is crucial to acknowledge that the country has experienced significant challenges in previous years

owing to various crimes committed during this demanding period.

While most students aim to excel with integrity and distinction, it is imperative to confront and address these pressing issues.

SERIOUS VIOLATIONS OR CRIMINAL OFFENCES:

  • Bringing unauthorised materials into the examination room, such as notes, textbooks, or cell phones, is strictly prohibited.

    • Possession alone can lead to disqualification even if the materials are not used.

    • Using a cell phone or any electronic device to access information or communicate during the exam is considered cheating.

  • If someone else sits the exam on a candidate's behalf, the student and the impersonator can face criminal charges.

    • Providing false information about identity or qualifications to write the exam can also be considered fraud.

  • Copying answers from another student or allowing others to copy your answers is strictly prohibited.

    • This includes sharing answers through any form of communication during the exam.

  • Offering bribes to exam officials or trying to influence them to obtain exam papers or favourable results constitutes corruption, which is a criminal offence.

    • Any individual involved in leaking exam papers or sharing content from the exams before the scheduled time is committing a serious crime.

    • This applies to students, teachers, and officials.

  • Engaging in behaviour that disrupts the exam environment, such as causing disturbances, vandalising school property or delaying an exam by, for example, a bomb threat during the examination period can lead to criminal charges.

CONSEQUENCES:

Offenders may be disqualified from the subject or all subjects, depending on the severity of the offence.

  • A ban from writing exams for a specified period may be imposed.

  • Certain actions, such as impersonation, leaking exam papers or a false bomb threat, can lead to prosecution and a criminal record.

  • Results can be withheld or nullified, impacting the student's ability to graduate.
