Animals have much more sensitive hearing than humans, and it is unacceptable for thousands of pets to suffer every year from fireworks being set off. During this stressful time, many pets require medication, and animals often run away from home.
The Explosives Act No. 26 of 1956 is a law that applies across the country with no exceptions.
Section 10.34 of the Act clearly states that it is illegal to discharge any firework in a building, on a public thoroughfare, or in a public place without written permission from the local authority.
Section 10.35 of the Act is equally evident in stating that no person may hold a public display of fireworks on any premises without the written permission of the Chief Inspector of Explosives (commonly referred to as "having a permit").
Non-compliance with these conditions is a criminal offence and must be followed.
Fireworks can be particularly disturbing and damaging to animals' hearing, emitting sounds of up to 190 decibels, which is 110 to 115 decibels above the range of 75 to 80 decibels where damage to the human ear begins.
Firecrackers generate an even higher noise level than fireworks, gunshots (140 decibels), and some jet planes (100 decibels).
The noises caused by fireworks and firecrackers can lead to hearing loss and tinnitus in animals, and frightened animals may run away to escape the startling and confusing blasts.
Repeated exposure to unexpected, unpredictable loud noises can cause phobias in many animals, and careless use of fireworks can cause mutilations and fatal accidents in animals near the event, as well as fires that harm animals.
This is unacceptable, and those who engage in such activities must be held accountable.
KEEPING YOUR PETS SAFE:
If you own a pet, you must keep them safe during fireworks displays.
Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, ferrets, and birds are easily frightened, and it is crucial to treat them with special care.
Ensure that all animals have identification and stay home with them if possible.
If you cannot be home, keep them inside, preferably in a room such as a kitchen where the windows are higher and more difficult to jump through.
Ask a trustworthy friend to check on your animals if you are not home.
You can mask any noise by drawing curtains and playing calming music at a reasonable volume.
Give your pet extra bedding to burrow into so it feels safe, and cuddle and stroke your pet if it helps them relax.
Cover any enclosures with thick blankets or a duvet to block out the sight of the fireworks and deaden the sound of fireworks, but make sure there is enough ventilation.
Shouting at a frightened pet will only make them more stressed, and it is crucial to show them love and support during this difficult time.
Think about fitting pets with a microchip so that if they do run away, they can be quickly reunited with you.
Put familiar and comforting things around them, such as toys, and give them something to do, such as giving your dog a chewy bone, lots of catnip, or a catnip toy for cats.
Ensure your pets have a hearty and nutritious meal around nightfall to make them more likely to be sleepy.
Herbal remedies for animals can also help relax them in situations that may cause them to become anxious.
If your pets react badly to fireworks, seek professional advice from your veterinarian.
Be responsible and take all necessary steps to keep your pets safe during fireworks displays.
