PROJECT: GENERAL ELECTION 2024

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Voting is an essential aspect of civic engagement and empowerment. By casting their votes in the next election,

citizens of South Africa can actively shape the future of their country, influence policies,

and contribute to the vitality of the democratic system.

Read our recent project:

ON ELECTION DAY:

  • On election day, go to the voting station where you are registered.

  • Show the voting officer your green, bar-coded South African ID book or a temporary identification certificate.

  • The voting officer checks that your name appears on the voters' roll.

  • Once the voting officer is satisfied that:

  • you have the correct ID,

  • are a registered voter and

  • have not already voted,

  • the next step will be that:

    • your name is marked off the roll,

    • your ID is stamped on the second page,

    • and your thumbnail is inked.

  • Then, the voting officer stamps the back of the correct number of official ballot papers (one per election) and gives them to you.

  • Take your ballot paper to an empty ballot booth, mark it, fold it so that your choice is not visible, and place it in the ballot box.

  • Voting stations will be open from 7 am and remain open until 9 pm on 29 May 2024.

  • If you are in the line before 9 pm, the voting officers must allow you to vote, and you cannot be shown away.

  • You are allowed to ask for another ballot form if your own has been compromised in any way or if you have made a mistake on it.

  • Voting stations have some ballot papers in reserve for such instances.

  • A maximum of 1 vote per person per election is allowed.

As South Africa holds its seventh democratic elections this week, voters will, for the first time,

receive three ballot papers instead of two ballots.

The three ballot papers are as follows:

  • The national ballot:

  • This ballot will consist of a list of political parties vying for 200 seats in the National Assembly.

  • It will be used to vote for political parties.

  • There are currently 52 parties on this ballot, and the configuration will be a dual column.

  • The regional or province-to-national ballots:

  • Political parties and independent candidates will contest the seats reserved for each province in the National Assembly.

  • Voters will use this ballot to elect a political party or an independent candidate to represent them in the National Assembly.

  • The number of contestants ranges from 30 to 44 on regional ballots.

  • The configuration of this ballot is a single column.

  • The provincial ballots:

  • This ballot is unique to each province and includes parties and independent candidates competing for seats in each respective provincial legislature.

  • This ballot will allow voters to choose either a political party or an independent candidate to represent them in provincial legislatures.

  • The number of contestants on the provincial legislature ballots ranges from 24 to 45.

Be wary of false statements, rumours and information spread on social media before,

on and even after Wednesday, 29 May 2024.

Such misinformation is alarming and creates uncertainty and panic.

Numerous videos, including some from previous elections, have been shared without thorough vetting.

TAKE NOTE:

  • COVID, swine flu, flu and colds are rife.

  • Keep a safe distance from people.

  • Take your own:

  • Black pen.

  • Hand sanitation.

  • South African ID book.
