PROJECT: IMPORTANT RED FLAGS AND RISK INDICATORS WITH REGARDS TO MISSING PERSONS (PART 3)

HOW FAMILIES CAN SPOT DANGER BEFORE IT HAPPENS.

The best way to prevent a missing person crisis is early detection of risk.

Specialised Security Services (SSS) emphasises that families, schools, workplaces, and community members must learn

to recognise warning signs, take action, and report concerns before a disappearance occurs.

Early intervention often prevents tragedy.

Please read our previous 2 projects for more context:

1. SUDDEN CHANGE IN ROUTINES OR BEHAVIOUR:

  • Unexplained absences from school, work, or social commitments.

  • Frequent late nights or secretive behaviour.

  • Refusal to communicate or respond to calls/messages.

  • Sudden withdrawal from family or friends.

  • Changing or hiding phone numbers or social media accounts.

  • These behaviours may indicate coercion, grooming, substance abuse, or planning of a runaway.

2. THREATS OR VIOLENCE IN THE HOME OR COMMUNITY:

  • Evidence of domestic violence, verbal threats, or intimidation.

  • Recent break-ins, harassment, or stalking incidents.

  • Known disputes with ex-partners, neighbours, or associates.

  • Previous instances of abduction, bullying, or criminal targeting.

  • Even subtle threats or ongoing intimidation can escalate quickly into a disappearance or abduction.

3. HIGH-RISK SOCIAL CIRCLES OR CONTACTS:

  • Friends or associates involved in gangs, drugs, or criminal activity.

  • Online contacts who are older or unknown, trying to isolate or manipulate.

  • Unknown individuals offering money, gifts, or transport without family knowledge.

  • Sudden association with suspicious social groups or dating apps.

  • Grooming, coercion, and criminal recruitment often start here.

4. DIGITAL RED FLAGS:

  • New secret social media accounts or disappearing messages.

  • Requests to delete call logs, messages, or GPS history.

  • Suspicious phone activity: sudden unavailability, unexplained roaming locations, or blocked contacts.

  • Online threats, blackmail, or messages from unknown numbers.

  • Families should document everything digitally; screenshots and logs are critical evidence.

5. MEDICAL, MENTAL, OR VULNERABILITY SIGNS:

  • Decline in mental health, signs of depression, anxiety, or psychosis.

  • Chronic conditions without proper medication or treatment.

  • Dementia, Alzheimer’s, autism, or cognitive impairment.

  • Recent trauma, abuse, or stress triggers.

  • Signs of substance misuse or coercive control.

  • Vulnerable individuals are at higher risk of being lost, abducted, or exploited.

6. FINANCIAL OR LEGAL PRESSURES:

  • Debt, loans, or financial disputes that may lead to abduction or coercion.

  • Threats related to job loss, eviction, or court disputes.

  • Unexpected involvement with fraudsters, scams, or illegal schemes.

  • Financial pressure often drives people into unsafe situations or exposes them to criminal targeting.

7. TRAVEL AND MOVEMENT INDICATORS:

  • Sudden desire to move far from home without reason.

  • Frequent visits to remote locations, transport hubs, or airports.

  • Unexplained overnight trips or attempts to avoid tracking.

  • Loss of interest in local routines or communities.

  • Families should monitor these patterns carefully and document any anomalies.

8. EARLY INTERVENTION ACTIONS:

  • When red flags are observed:

    • Communicate calmly but clearly with the person—do not accuse; gather facts.

    • Notify SAPS immediately if there is a risk of abduction, coercion, or foul play.

    • Preserve digital evidence, messages, and call logs.

    • Monitor social networks, travel, and digital activity for suspicious patterns.

    • Contact Specialised Security Services (SSS) for professional risk assessment and proactive intervention.

  • Early action dramatically improves safety outcomes and may prevent a disappearance altogether.

Missing person cases rarely occur without warning signs.

Families, guardians, and communities must learn to recognise behavioural, social, digital, medical, and financial red flags. Awareness and timely action can prevent crises, protect vulnerable individuals, and reduce the burden on SAPS.

Specialised Security Services (SSS) continues to educate the public because prevention is far more effective than reaction. When warning signs are present, or when a disappearance seems imminent,

Mr. Mike Bolhuis and his experienced Specialist Investigators should be contacted immediately.

Early intervention saves lives.
